Our environmental responsibility
We are committed to reducing our carbon
footprint and impact on the environment. The amount of water and energy we used over the year reduced:
Water from 199,662 to 193,908 cubic metres Energy from 62,993 to 62,618 MwH
The use of our inter-site minibus for staff between our Basingstoke and Winchester hospitals increased. We increased the number of vehicles from one to two in July 2016, increasing the number of daily trips from 14 to 32, and the service carried more than 30,000 passengers, with the average number of passengers on each trip steadily increasing. We support the cycle to work scheme, park and ride and a staff car lease scheme of newer and greener vehicles through a salary sacrifice scheme.
We recognise the importance of sustainability and good corporate citizenship. We will continue to take actions to improve sustainability in 2017/18, including:
Overall, our Trust scored 54% in the NHS Sustainable Development Unit’s self-assessment. The assessment measures our performance against the tool’s criteria for good corporate citizenship. Our score is better than the NHS Sustainable Development Unit’s suggested score of 50%.
Preparing a business case to upgrade all lighting to LED Working with our waste contractor to increase recycling rates Investing in energy efficient plant and equipment when carrying out capital developments Investing in additional cycle storage facilities Improving public transport options for staff and patients to discourage car use Working with supply chains to encourage the use of sustainable products and services through procurement
