Compassionate Care
It has been a groundbreaking year for the Countess of Brecknock Hospice, with planning permission granted for a new building and staff from our Trust setting up a new service that helps people close to the end of their lives stay out of hospital and in their own homes.
Planning permission for a new building, which will result in the hospice nearly doubling in size, has been granted by Test Valley Borough Council, with the Countess of Brecknock Trust launching a £3million appeal to turn the plans into a reality.
The new building will house 10 additional single, en-suite rooms for inpatients, a relatives’ room, a quiet room, therapy and treatment rooms, as well as new reception and day care areas. Outside, the plans include four new garden areas for patients and visitors to enjoy, with all rooms having access to one of these.
Creating more space for day treatments will enable us to expand our hospice home care support team, which has been set up this year to provide flexible care at home for patients who might have otherwise needed to be admitted to hospital to manage their symptoms.
Gina Bignell, one of our home care support workers, said: “Patients are always saying how grateful they are to us for caring for them, but we are grateful to be able to provide the service. It’s so rewarding.”
“I cannot praise the nurses who come out to treat me at home enough. They are all really
friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Keith Chesney, Hospice Home Care Support patient
