Our team of emergency nurse practitioners help to make sure patients are seen sooner in our emergency departments, using their specialist skills to assess, treat and discharge patients quickly.

They are able to support our emergency doctors by treating patients who arrive with minor illnesses and injuries such as sprained ankles and broken wrists.

Berni Hampton has worked in the emergency department at Winchester for 16 years, spending the last five as an emergency nurse practitioner.

She said: “Every day is interesting and I get a lot of job satisfaction from being able to work out what is wrong with a patient, sort them out and send them home fixed up.

“Nursing was something that I always wanted to do and it’s really good that I have been able to continue developing and learning throughout my career.”

Berni is at the frontline of our efforts to reducing waiting times in our emergency departments and as part of our programme to do this we have created more space for Berni and her fellow emergency nurse practitioners at Winchester.

“The changes have given us more room to see and treat patients and allowed us to focus on our patients,” Berni said. “It has also improved the capacity of the emergency department, freeing up four cubicles for patients who have more serious problems.”

Like many other trusts across the country, we continue to find it a challenge to either admit or discharge 95% of patients within four hours of arrival – but we are making positive strides and were able to hit this target in the final month of 2016/17.

Berni said: “I’m proud that we have been able to improve our performance against the national emergency department targets over the course of the year. The target came from patients and you can see that they are much happier when they have shorter waits.”
