Patient care
Our Trust continues to lead the way in the field of urology, achieving three key landmarks over the past year.
Last summer, we became one of only three Trusts in the country to offer high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and cryoablation treatments for prostate cancer.
Staff from the department also played a key role in a trial that saw advanced MRI scans used to investigate whether men had developed prostate cancer. The trial was a huge success, with the use of scans found to dramatically improve the accuracy of cancer diagnoses.
Then, right at the end of the year, we became the first Trust in the country to treat patients with enlarged prostates using a new, non-invasive procedure.
“We are always looking for ways to improve outcomes for our patients by using non-invasive methods wherever possible.
Using MRI scans to detect prostate cancer is not just more accurate than taking a biopsy, which is what happened in the past, it also has much less of an impact on the patient. We can also lessen the risk of side effects such as incontinence and impotence for men who do have prostate cancer by using methods such as HIFU and cryoablation, which allow us to protect healthy parts of the gland.
