Recruiting and investing in staff We aim to attract the best people to join our Trust and develop and invest in our existing staff.
We recruit staff who demonstrate that they share our values. We work closely with our education partners to attract and train the best people, providing high-quality learning environments and practice placements, with experienced mentorship support. More than 80 newly-qualified nurses and allied healthcare professionals joined us as preceptees last year.
Our military engagement programme, Step into Health, has also gone from strength to strength. The programme offers support to service leavers, reservists, veterans and their spouses and during 2016/17 we worked with more than 100 participants, providing around 700 days of placements, with 17 military staff moving into permanent roles with us.
We continue to support staff through apprenticeships and a variety of vocational courses ranging from Dementia Care to Electronic Engineering. Last year, we supported more than 100 members of staff through apprenticeships and almost 200 through vocational courses. We have also supported an increased number of clinical support workers to study either for the Care Certificate or the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care.
We have been part of a joint regional bid to pilot the development of the nursing associate role, which will bridge the gap between clinical support workers and nurses. We are supporting 10 of our staff to progress through a two-year academic programme to become nursing associates, who will be able to carry out duties such as medicines management and will be regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
We provide a wide range of well-being experiences and initiatives for staff. Last year we held the first of what is to be an annual health promotion campaign, with 27 different events and therapies, ranging from reflexology and meditation to gym sessions and even Polish classes, available to staff.
In 2017/18, we aim to grow our apprenticeship programme and continue to develop progressive career pathways to optimise skills, support career development and help retain our best staff. We plan to focus on our leadership capacity and capability and will launch a new talent management and leadership development programme.
