61 East Cork Rugby Notes Youghal RFC

from injury showed her experience in marking the

defensive

Youth Rugby: U15 Girls Sunday 27th

of Novem-

ber saw Youghal Ladies U15 and U18 teams take on Shannon in Limerick. The under 15s started off the double header with a blazing start. Within the first 10 minutes Youghal were on the scoreboard with a try from Kira with Orla to convert to lead 7 nil. From the restart the South East side got right back up into Shannon territory which saw Ra- chel make a super break and Orla in support was unlucky not to capitalise. Shannon however woke up after twenty minutes and tested the defensive

visitor’s line. Shannon

were patient and eventu- ally crossed the line but failed to convert. Shan- non were soon on the at- tack from the restart but Cliona’s quick thinking amounted to her inter- cept a ball on the 5 yard line and run the length of the pitch, in sight of an astounded Shannon side, Orla converted. Shannon again came back with a game plan of pick and go, the South East side dealt well with this but the en- ergy sapping tackles wore the defence line down to see Shannon cross the try line. Roisin just back

organising her forwards with encouragement and drive. Kira in scrum half organised the play bril- liantly and the work of forwards Roisin and Asia were vital to the Youghal side going in at half time in the lead. The second half saw a different game in Shannon coming with all guns blazing, the East Cork side did not give up and played great rugby. Shannon again with the pick and go scored against the energy sapped south east side. Shannon again made an attack leading with big runs in what can only be described as a greatly organised and cool South East defen- sive line. Shannon got a sniff of a gap and were through for another try. Rachel and Zoe two of our new recruits this year made some excellent runs and tackles today they are improving week on week. The Youghal girls muscled on to block down a kick and chase for what was unfortunate enough to be held up. The girls have improved weekly and to- day’s performance was not reflected on the final score Shannon got some lucky bounces and breaks. The team worked incredi- bly hard and tackled well against a much bigger and

Under 18 Girls The under 18s (a com- bination of Youghal and Midleton) met a seriously organised

and experi-

enced Shannon side after the U15s game concluded. The South East girls had been working on defence and organisation over the previous weeks and their hard work was testament in this game. The first half saw a battle between both 10 yard lines, both teams making breaks and being closed down. Laura Leigh made some great attack- ing runs and Lily worked well at securing and sup- porting the breaks. Shan- non however showed their cunning experience at ruck time and managed to turn over many of the at- tacking ball. Rebecca and Sorcha worked brilliantly in defence. Sinead’s tackle rate was second to none; her reading of the game and her support for her team showed her many years of previous experi- ence. In the closing min- utes of the first half Shan- non crossed the try line to score and convert. The second half started off as an all Shannon affair, the attacks came flooding into

the East Cork de-

fence, credit to the team for their patience and hard work, Shannon ran in three scores. The East

Cork side didn’t give up they fought back for a very hard earned try that went through the entire teams hands to be finished off by Sorcha and converted. East Cork didn’t leave it there more

they tried several attacks however

it was a day where the bounce of the ball and the chances just went against them. They certainly did not look like the new team on the block,

their drive

ambition and dedication shown today will stand to them in the coming matches.

Boys Under 18 On Friday the 2nd

of

December Youghal’s Under 18s played their last

league match before

Christmas against Wa- terford City. Youghal had a big panel of players on the night but were fac- ing a tough Waterford team. The Waterford side made the better start and went 15-0 up early on. A flurry of tries before half time, including two for Youghal’s Jordan Yellop left the score at 25-12 at half time. Youghal tired late in the second half and let in a few soft scores, leaving the full time score 40-12 in favour of Water- ford City. The league will now be seeded and re- drawn so hopefully there will be a few more positive results for Youghal in the New Year.

School’s Rugby Pobalscoil Boys Seniors:

Well done to the Senior Boys team today who beat Newtown from Waterford 26pts to 24pts. This team is made up mainly of our clubs U18 side. It also allows new lads to have a taste of rugby without some of the pressure of league points. Our school captain this year is Jordan Yellop and he certainly played the captains part today scoring 3 tries and converting all 3 for a per- sonal tally of 21 pts. Our other try was scored by Jack Monaghan. Overall it was a good team per- formance with the scrum particularly strong giving scrum half Seán Hennes- sey a good platform for our running game. The li- neout also functioned well with Ryaudrí McSweeney hitting Dillon Hogan and Killian Barron with some

excellent throws.

Newtown played to their strengths which were an excellent maul and a pick- ing and driving game. This is where first up tack- les and competing at ruck time needs improvement in future games. Well done to Oisín Burke and Cath- al Kavanagh for helping out Newtown after they picked up a few injuries and Sebasrian Pula and Killian Barron for helping them out in the second half and also Sean Walsh and Isaac O’Sullivan for playing their first game of rugby for the school. Thanks to David Bourke

and Pádraig McCarthy for helping out. Team: 1. Michael Murphy 2. Ruaidhri McSweeney 3. Nichol Barcelona 4. Coran O’Halloran 5. Dillon Hogan 6 Killian Barron 7. Darragh Nolan 8. Andrew O’Brien 9. Sean Hennessy 10. Jack O’Neill 11. Sebastian Pula 12. Jordan Yellop (cap-

played in a Development blitz in Waterpark RFC. First up was CBS Carrick – Tries from Evan Villis and Cian Walsh gave Po- balscoil a good 12-7 win in a tough game. Next was a game against a very strong Waterpark

side.

Pobalscoil scored Conor O’Neill. Pobalscoil’s last game was against De La Salle and we finished on a high with a 24-12 win against a tough opposi- tion with tries from Fionn Gardener, Conor O’Neill, Conor Kenefick and Evan Villas and two conversions from Conor O’Neill.
