Should Garryvoe and Claycastle Beach Have Their Bins Removed or Changed in Size?
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
East Cork Municipality
are to consider removing litter bins from Claycastle and Garryvoe beaches in an effort
dumping. The move comes fol-
lowing a motion tabled by Sinn Fein Councillor Dan- ielle Twomey at
the bor-
oughs December meeting on Monday 5 December. The Midleton based Cllr
said she was approached in recent days by constituents complaining of mess. Senior Engineer David told the meeting
Clarke
outside of bathing season the bins seem to attract more rubbish. Mr Clarke claimed the
bins encourage fly-tipping, attracting peckish crows, rather than reducing the
to deter illegal
level of litter on the beach- es.
birds are
As a result the hungry dragging litter
stashed in bins and scat- tering it far and wide in the hope of finding a tasty morsel.
Municipal chairwoman
Mary Linehan Foley said she would be opposed to the removal of bins. She said it wouldn’t be fair on the people walking their dogs who currently use the facility. Fine Gael councillor Mi-
chael Hegarty agreed with the independent councillor stating he would prefer to see the bin receptacle, re- duced significantly in size The
senior engineer
said reducing the number of waste disposal units on beaches during the winter months has in the past con- densed the level of litter.

• Some of the storm damage caused by last Decembers winter storms.

BADLY damaged sec- tions of
the People’s
Path Coastal Walk in Rostellan village are to be repaired. The works which are to
be carried out in the com- ing days are funded under
Cork County Councils Coastal Management De- partment.
Last December’s violent
storms had compromised large sections of the public amenity, with many fearing the resource was in danger of being swept away in the next big storm. The walkway which
stretches from Rostellan Village to Whitegate was developed in 2004 through a community initiative with Cork County Council providing partial funding. Over the years local res- idents had invested heavily in maintaining the route, with businesses in the area providing financial sup-
port.
Dog walkers and lo- cal running clubs use the path regularly. Many other clubs including the GAA use the facility for winter training. The €20,000 contract
was awarded to Manning Ground Works last Friday 25 November.

• Visiable decay along the edges of the People’s Path Fine Gael councillor Mi-
chael Hegarty welcomed the news he said “repair to the sea wall should com- mence in early December. Hopefully it will be com- pleted in the coming weeks under normal weather conditions, providing safe- ty and security of the sea wall for all who use it.”
Meanwhile the authori-
ty has also set aside funds to carry out a feasibility study on Ballybrannigan beach. The popular East Cork
beach was closed earli- er this year as a result of damage and erosion dur- ing the Easter Storm on the 10 April.

Extensive damage was caused to Ballybrannigan beach car park, the public access slip, and to the cliff face. The feasibility study is
expected to identify low cost measures to help re- duce the level of erosion and improve safety for the general public.
