2016 The Year of the UNDERDOG With the year gone by
now consigned to the an- nals of history, it would be fair to say that it certain- ly was one of surprises in terms of sport, and while many of the big guns did come through, there were certainly plenty of surpris- es also. The big one I suppose
has to be Leicester City winning the
Premier
League, leaving a host of multi-millon-pound clubs in their wake and their success perhaps helped
others to go on and emu- late their achievement. Connaught
under the guidance
Rugby, of
Pat Lam, picked up the Rabo Direct Pro 12 to crown what was for them a remarkable success, with John Muldoon leading a side that played expansive rugby throughout the sea- son, and it was great that they got their deserved re- ward for their efforts. Ireland too
produced
some teriffic displays to defeat South Africa, New
Zealand and Australia in the same calendar year, thus putting them into the top four, which is a great achievement for Joe Schmidt and his side. Nearer
to home Car-
berry Rangers captured a first Cork senior football title, while Fr O’Neill’s came with a late surging run to claim the Interme- diate hurling title. Several other sides came close to causing upsets with many contests going down to the wire.

Glen Rovers retained
the Cork Senior hurling crown, but failed to make it to the All-Ireland stage as they lost out to Ballyea from Clare in the Munster Final. Cork City came close in the SSE Airtrici- ty league, but once again they had to settle for the runners-up spot to Dun- dalk who also retained their title. However a late Sean Maguire goal gave Cork City some joy as they claimed the Ford FAI Cup to make it a great

year for them. Tipperary showed a
ruthless streak to win the Senior Hurling All-Ireland defeating holders Kilken- ny, while once again Mayo failed to get the better of Dublin, who retained the Senior Football All Ire- land after a replay. There was some bit of joy in the West as Mayo did steal the All-Ireland U21 foot- ball title from Cork, with goalkeeping errors prov- ing fatal in both of these deciders. The wins of Anna Lisa

O’Donovan at the Olym- pics was another turn up for the books, especially as Irish boxers were expected to be the stars of the show, while
local hero Orla
Barry did not dissappoint with a silver medal the the Paralympics from Rio. The ticket scandal that is still rumbling on incolving Pat Hickey and the de- parture of Boxing Coach Billy Dunne
overshadowed the notable
certainly Irish
Olympic effort in Rio. There were plenty of achievements in
golf with Seamus Power, horse racing, with Aidan
delighted to accept the
cheques on behalf of their group, following which a great night of su- perb food, dancing, sing- ing and entertainment followed. Well done to all in-

having superb years as trainers. Notably too there was
some sad times with the sudden death of Munster Coach, Anthony Foley and former Cork County Board Chairman, Mi- chael Dolan among those that passed to their eternal reward during the year. All in all then, 2016
will certainly go down as the year of the underdog, with all eyes now eyeing up what 2017 has to offer. No doubt there
volved in the magnificent fundraising events over the year, and to the gen- erosity of the people of Youghal, East Cork and West Waterford for their ongoing support.
