A Letter from The Editor
Dear Readers, In this week’s East Cork Journal we spoke to
Youghal man Patrick O’ Sullivan who has been over 16 months for a disabled parking bay outside his home, Patrick in 2014 sadly suffered numer- ous strokes and as a result he requires the parking bay close to his home. You may recall that during the course of the year we reported on numerous article where Midleton boy Milo McCarthy was fundraising for the Red Cross Migrant Appeal. We were delighted to report at the time that Milo raised an amazing €17,742 from busking. In this week’s newspaper we are thrilled to inform our readers that Milo has been awarded young Person of the Year Award in recognition of his support of the migrant crisis. Good news for the resident and road users in Rostellan as the badly damaged sections of the people’s path coastal walk is to be repaired. The works which are to be carried out in the coming days are funded under Cork Coun- ty Councils Coastal Management Department.

A Midleton based his- torian is hoping to open a new chapter in the history of Mid- leton’s Market House and its Town Hall. Hundreds of book loves
call the bottom floor of Market House home since 1996 when the town’s li- brary service took over the structure. Over the
years the
buildings upper floor and clock tower have been ig- nored due to a lack of fi- nance. Now historian Tony
Harpur is appealing for volunteers to help identify ways of raising the nec- essary monies to save the clock and upper levels of the historic building. East
Cork Municipal
Clerk Joe McCarthy told the East Cork Journal “It’s expected the clocks cupola will be repaired sometime in 2017 at a cost of €60,000. Any group who wish to pursue ex- tra funding for the area is more than welcome to do

December 2016 Killeagh student Receives CPA Ireland Prize for Academic Excellence
• Anna Grunder, from Killeagh.(Picture Colm Mahady / Fennells). Anna Grunder, from
Killeagh was the recipient of an award for academic excellence by the Institute of Certified Public Ac- countants in Ireland (CPA Ireland) as she was con- ferred with membership of CPA Ireland on Sat- urday last in Croke Park. The award marks her ac- complishments in the CPA Ireland examinations and best performance in the
paper on Advanced Tax- ation. At this week’s ceremony,
which took place in Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland’s newest
accountants had
many reasons to celebrate. In addition to being ad- mitted to the institute, the members of the Class of 2016 were also celebrating the strong career prospects for professional account- ants. High demand for
newly qualified CPAs has resulted in full employ- ment for this year’s grad- uates. Speaking at the ceremo-
ny, Nano Brennan CPA Ireland President, said “I am delighted to welcome my new CPA colleagues to the profession as we mark our 90th
anniversary. Our
anniversary takes place against the positive back- drop of demand for pro-
fessional accountants and growth in the wider econ- omy. The full employment for this year’s graduating class clearly shows that it is a valuable qualification and one that opens a lot of doors both nationally and internationally. I would like to congratulate all of our newest CPAs for their hard work and achieve- ments to date.” “In conjunction with
our sponsors, CPA Ire- land each year present an award to those students who have
highest examination mark in each subject
achieved the for the
CPA examinations. Con- gratulations to the 2016 prize-winners who come from diverse roles in both practice and industry and thank you to all our part- ner firms involved in this event”.

so.” Constructed in 1789 it’s
believed the market build- ing was designed by John Morrison the father of Sir Richard Morrison and grandfather
of William
Vitruvius Morrison who both designed Fota House. Over the years the up-
per floor has served many purposes from corpora- tion meetings to holding public receptions, a pub- lic reading room, holding courts, elections and more recently in the 1960s and 70’s it was used as a bad- minton court. The buildings clock is
believed to date back to 1750, it’s understood the time piece was removed from a previous structure which adorned the
site
and later incorporated into the new building. It’s unclear as to the
amount of work needed to be carried out on the structure, a rough estimate suggests it could cost in the region of €2million. “We don’t have a dedi-
cated exhibition space for works of art or historic ex- hibitions or lectures in the

town although the library is good at accommodating events in its limited space.” “We need to look at rais- ing funds and putting pres- sure on the council to look somewhere for the reve- nue. They may not have the money but we might get it somewhere like Fail- te
Ireland” commented Mr Harpur. He said he is also hop-
ing the committee would find a befitting way to mark the 350th
anniversary
of the granting of Midle- ton’s charter in 2020. The
local tour guide
said the library building should be the focus of any celebration as the Market house represents the oldest civic building in Midleton.
eastcorkjournal “Market house is the
symbol of the town that is now called Midleton. It’s the oldest civic building in the town. It’s only right it should play a central part in commemorating the event.” For more
