Counselling • Members of the Ambulance Crew and Youghal 1st Responders take a little time out together. by DENISE FITZGERALD “We usually meet only

when there is an emer- gency, so we don’t often get time together for a

social chat” is one of the reasons why Youghal 1st Responders extended an invite to the local HSE Paramedics to take an hour or two out together to enjoy a social evening

and have a little team

building and bonding at Christmas time. The twenty or more

friends met on Saturday night last in Youghal and had a wonderful evening

of good food, plenty of chat, stories which were recounted and relived, and a relaxing few hours which were much enjoyed by everyone. Happy Christmas to all

our wonderful paramed- ics and voluntary emer- gency services who will be on call, but hopefully not called out, over the festive season.

Toastmasters Sweet Anticipation of Christmas in Garryvoe

by JOHN COLBERT No

two meetings of

Toastmasters are ever the same and President

Pat

Fitzgerald had an expecta- tion of something special as he opened our meeting on the 29 November. Un- der the able stewardship of Toastmaster Eleanor Her- lihy, the meeting got off to a great start and she made sure to welcome our four guests,

before introduc-

ing the people on the pro- gramme. Jeremiah O’Do- novan, Grammarian for the night, provided an in-depth explanation of

his word

“Prize”, carefully exploring all the possible nuances so that

in any doubt as to how they should proceed. Topicsmaster of the

evening, Breda Buckley, re- galed her audience with a wide range of topics that were light, serious and wit- ty in equal measure, which stimulated a prize

of responses. We had two stand-up sales persons; Ber- nadette successfully selling a selfie stick and Bernie selling something which we couldn’t even see. Mar- garet O’Flynn acted as an impromptu TV3 reporter from Garryvoe, reporting on a major incident and Jeremiah, Denis and Pat

the members weren’t

discussed the career of Fidel Castro. Christmas featured with some members fully organised whilst others alas haven’t even begun prepara- tions yet. Claire McCarthy gave an in depth account of her favourite foods for Christmas dinner, for which she received the Best Topic Award. The highlight of the top-

ics session was the role play session. Margaret McCar- thy, a disgruntled customer, returned a faulty pair of binoculars to a tight fisted shopkeeper, Shay Rochford, who refused a refund. As expected, the results were hilariously funny, with some very creative flights of imag- ination. After the break, the meet- resumed

ing with speeches which were

three in-

range

teresting and entertaining. Never one to do things in half measures, Toastmaster Eleanor introduced each of the three speakers in rhym- ing verse. Our first speaker Denis McDonald delivered a project

from the Inter-

pretive Reading advanced manual. It was a poem written by the late Leonard Cohen, better known as the song “So Long Marianne”. It was a deeply striking poem with vivid imagery and Denis provided lots of background information on

the poet’s career, in particu- lar, why he returned to per- forming, having previously become a Buddhist monk. This speech was evaluated by Bernadette Hegarty who complimented the speaker’s voice. Margaret McCarthy de-

livered a speech from the ad- vanced Storytelling manual. Her speech titled ‘The Right to Vote’ was a biographical speech on the life and times of Emily Pankhurst, leader of

the Suffragette Move-

ment, who fought for wom- en’s right to vote. Margaret O’Flynn carefully evaluated this speech, highlighting the good points in Margaret’s impressive performance. Our third speech was also a project from the Sto- rytelling manual. Kathleen O’Connell’s ‘Sweet Antic- ipation’ was a wonderful- ly nostalgic look at older Christmas customs in Ire- land, beautifully delivered with some lovely word pic- tures and rich imagery. She reminded us of a time of the Christmas candle in the window, Christmas cards being sent and received and of the postman being invited into houses for a Christmas treat. Her Evaluator Chris- tine Conway paid tribute to the excellent picture of Irish social history, something which many older members

could identify with. It was warmly received by the ad- miring audience. General Evaluator, Shay

Rochford, provided his as- sessment

of the evening’s

proceedings. He paid trib- ute

to Eleanor Herlihy,

who came fully prepared to act as Toastmaster for the meeting, with a colour illus- trated programme, which contained a montage

of

photographs on the back, and for her introductions of the speakers. Topicsmaster, Breda Buckley, was compli- mented for her varied list of topics and creative ideas. Shay was very impressed overall with the standards of all the officers and the great fun and educational value of the night. Before closing the meet-

ing, President Pat stated that this meeting marked the for- mal completion of the first term of

our Toastmaster

year. He said it had been a vibrant, successful, enter- taining period and mani- fested all that is good about Toastmasters, especially the Talking Heads club. It was encouraging to have gained two new members and to have a number of guests attending every meeting. The
