Community Cats Network Coffee Morning in Ballycotton CUNNINGHAM
by LEAH RING and ANDREA
The annual coffee
morning in aid of the Community Cats Network was held in the Schooner Bar Ballycotton on Satur- day, 3 December. €817 Was raised on the
morning in Ballycotton for the voluntary, self-funded community group. Emily Peneau, Commu-
nity Cats Network said: “It was a fantastic morning and was very well attend- ed. It is a good start and it all helps.” The group was formed in April 2012 to help tack-
le the issue of stray cats having numerous litters of kittens and overwhelming communities. Mrs Peneau said: “The
funds raised will help to neuter about 25 cats in the area…It is hard to say how many cats are still in the area but there is a massive amount. To give
a rough idea, East Cork is such a big area and in this year alone I have picked up about 500 cats that were neuter.” Community Cats Net-
work follow the system of trap, neuter and return (TNR) to protect the wel- fare of feral and stray cats and funds raised will help
with their annual running costs. Mrs Peneau said: “What
we do is trap, neuter and return stray and feral cats. We have been working on this for many years in the village of Ballycotton and it is now under control. There are no feral or stray kittens here.”
The organisation be-
lieve that the work assists the animals and people community in many ways. Mrs Peneau explained: “When these kittens
are
being born it is overwhelm- ing a lot of people who are feeding the stray cats. “ She
added: “Also, it
helps the community to have healthy cats in the area. Not lots and lots of unhealthy feral cats be-

cause neutering does help with health. This all helps the image of the commu- nity.”
Community Cats Net-
work strives to work closely with communities to help promote the importance of neutering for feral cats and provides support to mem- bers of the public. For more
