Phase two of Youghals Boardwalk We Are Committed But We Don’t Have Money
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
CORK County Coun- cil say they are trying to
extend Youghal’s
Eco Boardwalk to the Quality Hotel in Red- barn, but they are having a tough time finding the money to undertake the project. In 2012 planning per- mission was granted for phase two of the iconic boardwalk from Claycastle to Redbarn at an estimat- ed cost of over €1 million. Fáilte Ireland provided 75% of the funding for phase one from the Front Strand to Claycastle. The plan to continue of the existing wooden walk-
way crosses three sections of privately owned land. The
Council’s property
section say they are con- tinuing negotiations with the landowners. In a report to the East
Cork Municipality on Monday 5 December, Sean O’Callaghan one of the authority’s senior executive officers said the scope of the phase two project has changed af- ter the winter storms of 2013/2014 which caused severe damage to the cur- rent 400 metre structure. “The
delay in pro-
gressing was the works necessary to reconstruct phase one after the storm in 2013/2014. The chal- lenge is going to be fund-
ing.” As a result he said there
may be a need to revisit the design of phase two again. Over €200,000 was pro-
vided from a central gov- ernment fund in 2014 for the reinstatement of the popular walk. Municipality Chair-
woman Councillor Mary Linehan Foley told the sitting what
the board-
walk means to Youghal is that people in wheelchairs, mothers and fathers with kids in buggies can travel the entire six kilometres of Youghal beach which is vitally important because the town was dependent on tourism. She said “we all know
the value of phase one, the amount of people that use it
from West Water-
ford and Cork City itself is unbelievable. “ “We will continue perusing it with anyone we can speak to in the area, like our TDs who promised all this money prior to the election. Let’s call their bluff now. Fine Gael Councillor
Michael Hegarty said it was crucial that every ef- fort was made to imple- ment phase two consider- ing Cork County Council have developed a Physical and Wellbeing depart- ment. He said the boardwalk could compliment
the
physical and wellbeing strategy.
Ardmore Christmas Day Swim
It’s hard to believe that
it’s this time of year again already, where have the last few months gone on us? Not that we are com- plaining, we love that long run into the icy water of Ardmore Bay on Christ- mas Day! However, the run won’t be as long as it was last year, high tide is due at around 3 pm so our feet might not be like ice blocks this year. We are celebrating the year of our ever-pop-
20th
ular Christmas Day Swim, surely it must be one of the longest running in the country? Which is some- thing that we
are very
proud to have achieved. We are a constant sup- port to our local R.N.L.I. station in Youghal, rais- ing €2,147 last Christmas with thanks to all of our
