Cobh’s Parents and Children Together Group Family Fun Day Gets A Great Response
by ALAN SHEEHAN and ANDREA
CUNNINGHAM Cobh’s Parents and
Children Together (PAKT) group is held its annual family fun day last Satur- day, 3 December. PAKT, which operates
out of Cobh YMCA, held its fun day at the organi- sation’s premises in Tic-
knock Commercial Park, Cobh, from 2-4.30pm, and saw a big turnout from the community. “It went very, very well,” said Maria, a children’s worker with Cobh PAKT. “It was a great success. We had a very good attend- ance.” The
fun day offered
children the opportunity to make Christmas cards
or tree decorations at a craft table, or to decorate cakes at a food-based craft table. Refreshments were available on the day, free to all. “Santa turned up too,” said Maria. “We’d lots of people excited to take their picture
with him.
Lots happened on the day. We’d a raffle. That went very good. People were
delighted with their prizes, which were all donated by local businesses, which we were very thankful for.” The Raffle prizes were
sponsored by local busi- nesses including Pets Plus, Wilson’s Pharmacy, Gar- vey’s Supervalu Cobh, Cobh DIY, The Jewel Ha- ven, Coffee Cobh, Treas- ure Cove Jewellers, Cobh Ramblers Football Club,
among many of others. “We’d a section for
people,” said Maria, “to write
their wishes for themselves, their families,
the community, Cobh, and the world, and that all fit into our one-world week theme for the year, which is linked to when we got some funding from the National Youth Council of Ireland.” One World Week is a
week of youth-led aware- ness raising, education, and action that takes place throughout Ireland during
the third week of Novem- ber every year, and during which young people learn about local and global jus- tice issues and encouraged to celebrate the diversity of belonging to one world, to work in solidarity with others in Ireland, Europe, and globally. The YMCA is a non-de-
nominational Christian youth movement, the ser- vices and programmes of which are open to people of all faiths and of none, with YMCA Cobh estab- lished in the early 1990s
to meet

needs identified by repre- sentatives from the local community. Among nu- merous programs offered by the Cobh group, it also runs a family support pro- gramme, PAKT, which works with the whole fam- ily in providing a suite of activities and services. “We had some PAKT
parents turn up on the day too to volunteer as well,” said Maria. “We’d a very good response. There was a great atmosphere. It was smashing.”
