Midleton CBS 1-15 Doon CBS 1-12 Midleton CBS advance

to the qurter-finals of the Dr. Harty Cup following their three-point win over Clare School, Doon CBS, at Charleville on Wednes- day last. Even though the conditions were near per- fect for hurling, the fare on view was well below the standard needed to be in the final shake up of this prestigious competition. The game was hung in the balance in the opening half and it took a Ger Mill- erick goal immediately on the resumption after half time for Midleton to put

daylight between the sides. However Doon did not give up and were reward- ed a few minutes from the final whistle with a sublime goal to give Midleton a shock, but it was too little too late. Doon opened the strong-

est and had three points on the board inside the opening three minutes to Midleton’s solitary point. Goalie Ryan Renehan scored a long-range point for the opener with all of thirty seconds on the clock but Liam Gosnell balanced the books with a 30M free

for Midleton. Will Barry added a second point for Doon a minute later and centre forward Jack Ryan added a third for Doon CBS. Midleton fought back with points from Joe Stack and Ger Millerick to tie the game on five min- utes. Again Renehan was unerring from an 80M long free for Doon to go back in the lead again. However this was the last time they would lead in the game as Charlie Terry and Stack added a point each to put the East Cork school in front for the first time. Barry and Gosnell traded points twice from placed balls as the Midleton lads

began to get on top espe- cially in the half back and half forward lines. Gosnell added two further points before the break to let the half time score 0-9 to 0-6 in Midleton’s favour. The turning point in

the game occurred in the first minute of the second half when Midleton’s Ger Millerick got onto a long clearance near the road sideline and as he cut in- side his marker he took one look and drilled a low ball just inside the near post for the all important goal. Liam Gosnell add- ed another pointed free and then Doon upped the ante a bit as they reduced

the deficit by three points from Gavan Ryan, Bar- ry, and Mikey O’Brien as the game entered the final quarter. Midleton

add-

ed a point but again Will Barry raised two further white flags for Doon to reduce the difference to three points. Sensing dan- ger Gosnell added a point from play Liam O’Shea contributed a duo of points to give them a six-point cushion going into the fi- nal few minutes. Liam’s second point was worth the entrance fee alone as he cut a beautiful ball over the bar from a side-line to rapturous applause from both sides. As the game closed out, Doon full back, now pushed up to try to in- fluence the game, got in for

his side’s goal but referee Michael Sheehan blew the final whistle three minutes into added time. Midleton CBS now go into the draw for the quarter-finals. Scores: Midleton CBS:

Youghal United 2 Cherry Orchard F.C. 4 by DECLAN BARRON

F.A.I. Junior Cup Round of 64 Youghal United hosted

Dublin side Cherry Or- chard F.C. in the last 64 in the F.A.I. Junior Cup at Ardrath Park last Sunday afternoon. On a bitterly cold but dry day, both sides served up a very entertain- ing contest, with victory in the end going to the visitors who took the chances that came their way. In contrast Youghal will

look back on what might have been as had they con- verted some of the chances

that came their way they might have easily won. As early as the opening minute Youghal could have been in front as a superb ball in from Niall Farrell just elud- ed the outstretched leg of Cian Daly. Ross McCarthy also fired over from a free kick but all the Youghal ef- fort was undone as Cherry Orchard scored with their first real attack. The Dublin side won a

corner kick, taken short to Josh Clifford who swung it accross for Armstrong Bekombo to head Cherry Orchard into the lead. It was a setback for Youghal

but they did work their way back into the game with Leigh Desmond causing a few problems and coming close to forcing a penalty kick. Robert Cronin, Paul Kelly, Cian Daly and Des- mond were all strong on the ball, yet it was Junior Sanuszki that almost dou- bled the lead but his snap- shot hit the side netting. It was more proof that Cher- ry Orchard were a threat in attack, but Youghal too got their reward in the 42nd

minute as Cian Daly

was taken from behind just outside the box. From the resultant free kick Ross Mc- Carthy curled a beauty into the top corner to bring the sides level. It was no more

than Youghal deserved but in the final second of the half Junior Sanuszki hit the post to remind Youghal that Cherry Orchard were very much a threat. It took the visitors just

three minutes to go back in front as a through ball from Josh Clifford found Junior Sanuszki and he made no mistake to fire Cherry Orchard back into the lead. This goal was a big blow to Youghal, who were also facing the breeze, and while they battled hard they found the going tough against a well marshalled Dublin defence with Gavin Dixon and team captain Patrick Shorthall very strong.

While Youghal tried hard

they were again undone on 75 minutes as they conced- ed a needless corner, and when they failed to clear Armstrong Bekombo, fired to the net for his second of the afternoon, leaving Youghal with an uphill bat- tle. Once again Youghal dug deep and produced a flowing move involving Paul Kelly, Mark O’Connor and Leigh Desmond who set up Cian Daly for a ter- rific goal, bringing Youghal right back into contention. Youghal renewed their

efforts and pushed hard for an equaliser forcing a few corner kicks, but their efforts on each occasion were thwarted and in a

final twist it was Cherry Orchard that showed how it should be done as Adam Walsh grabbed his sides 4th goal to give them the win and a place in the last 32. Youghal battled to the fin- ish with Anthony Kelly go- ing close off his right foot while Mark O’Connor lost control in the area when he might have scored. It was a credible Youghal effort as they more than matched Cherry Orchard over the ninety plus minutes, but it was the clinical finishing of the visitors that was the main difference between the sides. Youghal United: Kevin

Anderson, Patrick Thomas, Zack Downing, Sean Ken-

neally, Ross McCarthy, An- thony Kelly, Lee Desmond Capt, Robert Cronin, Cian Daly, Paul Kelly and Niall Farrell. Subs used Maro O’Connor for N Farrell injd, A O;Connor for Z Downing and S Barry for C Daly both 85 mins. Cherry Orchard F.C. :
