모닝사이드 라이트 Morningside Lights 지역사회 사랑하기!
모닝사이드는 뉴욕 맨하튼 서북쪽에 위치한 모닝사이드 하이츠를 일컫는다. 대부분의 뉴요커들은 모닝사이드 하이츠가 어퍼 웨스트 지역에 속한다고 알고 있다. 그도 그럴 것이 모닝사이드 하이츠에는 콜롬비아 대학, 맨하튼 음대, 버나드 스쿨, 교육 대학, 존 디바인 대성당, 리버사이드 교회 등 상류사회의 전유물 로 여겨지는 학구적이고 예술적인 뉴욕의 랜드마크들이 모여있고, 게다가 리버사이드 파크, 모닝사이드 파크에서는 평온한 일상의 여유를 즐기는 시민들을 항시 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 그러나 이런 평온함이 존재하는 풍경의 바로 길 건너에는 아직도 밤 거리가 위험하다는 인상의 할렘이 있다. 그래서 콜롬비아 대학 교와 뉴욕의 예술가들이 머리를 맞대고 모닝사이드 라이트라는 문화행사를 기획한 것은 여러모로 의미가 있어 보인다. 모닝사이드 라이트는 미래의 우리 지 역 풍경이라는 주제를 공동의 청사진으로 공유하기 위해 모닝사이드 하이츠 주민들이 미래에 살고 싶은 집을 등불로 형상화할 수 있도록 돕는 무료 아트 워 크숍으로, 2주간 매일 진행됐다. 그리고 이 비전을 지역 사회 전체가 공유할 수 있도록 워크숍에서 제작된 등불을 이용해 야간 거리 퍼레이드를 진행했다. 어 둠 속에서 환하게 빛나는 공동의 미래를 제시함으로써 지역 사회의 이질적인 문화적 간극을 좁힐 수 있는 기회를 만든 셈이다. 모닝사이드 라이트 행사에 참 여한 아이들은 이러한 예술 행사를 통해 지역사회를 사랑하는 법을 배울 수 있어서 그 행사의 의미가 더욱 빛나 보였다.

A community event, Morningside Lights is held at Columbia University. Actually, it is a kind of an art workshop program for making lanterns. This program can help participants to get cre- ative and make their very own lanterns for a Parade. The parade will be held in Morningside Heights at night. Columbia University has never
done this before so it was an honor to try it out for the first time. The whole reason why they do this is because the people in the Uni- versity want the neighborhood to be comfortable around the school and so the neighbors can become friendly with the University. Ev- erything here is free and anyone who happens to stop by are more than welcome to participate in making the lanterns. You are allowed to make any lantern you would like that has to do with houses. The theme of the lanterns is supposed to be based on what the future houses in New York might be like. And who knows, maybe you might live in one of the designs someone made as a lantern in a few years!

You can use the three things that the University provides for you to build your future house. First, you can use bamboo or other types of wood, another thing that you can use is wire, and the last thing is a special kind of plastic. These things are what you need to make the base of the house, and when you are all done, the people at the University will cover it up with translucence paper so they can be lit as lanterns at the Halloween Parade! I made my lantern with the plastic and I imagined that my future house was going to be in a shape of an apple. With the plastic, I cut out a shape of an apple. Then I drew details on it and made it 3-D. If you ever need help on something or if you have a question, you can ask a person who
