DE LA SIERRA VINIEGRA DE ABAJO

70 km Cycling La Rioja CRR Cycling in Spain’s wine country

Ride with us on an exploration of La Rioja – the northern Spanish region renowned for its exceptional wines. We start the week on a comfortably graded cycle trail through the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, through peaceful mountain villages and past rolling grain pastures. We spend a night in the historic Yuso Monastery, birthplace of the Castilian language and now a comfortable hotel. Our route then takes us into the heart of La Rioja wine-growing region with the chance for wine-tasting and vineyard visits.

8 day tour itinerary

Day 1 Join tour Bilbao. Chance to see the remarkable Guggenheim museum. Day 2 Via Verde Drive to Burgos. We follow the Arlanzon river by bike until we join our excellent graded cycle trail to the peaceful little mountain village of Pineda de la Sierra. Day 3 Sierra de la Demanda We continue cycling through remote mountains along the easily-graded Via Verde, a converted railway track, before descending by road to Viniegra. Day 4 Yuso Monastery Today we cycle into La Rioja region, continuing the circuit around the Demanda mountains that leads us to our comfortable hotel in the historic Yuso Monastery – birthplace of the Castilian language. Day 5 Camino de Santiago We leave the Sierra de la

Demanda behind and cycle on another Via Verde and road to Briñas – our base in the wine-growing region. Along the way we cross the ancient pilgrims’ trail of St. James’ Way in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Days 6/7 La Rioja From our base in the heart of the vineyards we take a circular route to pass through medieval villages with a stop for wine- tasting at an important wine estate. The following day there is the option of another cycle route or perhaps a visit to an ultra-modern vineyard or one of the traditional wine estates. Day 8 We take a local bus back to Bilbao where the tour ends.
