Explore the mountainous trails of the Axarquia region in Andalucia
Join us for a centre-based week of mountain biking in Andalucia. We explore a network of trails, off-road routes and villages through the mountainous landscapes in and around the Parque Natural Sierra de Tejeda and Almijara. Each afternoon we return to our welcoming family-run hotel base in the typical Andalucian ‘white village’ of Canillas, where we can enjoy delicious local food and sample the region’s famous sweet wine.
8 day tour itinerary
Day 1 Join tour Malaga airport. Drive to Canillas de Albaida. Day 2 Collado Pass We head straight into the Natural Park, across rivers and up to a 950m pass for commanding views of both the mountain range and the coast. Day 3 Vulture Sanctuary Cross a Roman bridge and commence the long climb up to Carboneros, where we have the chance to observe vultures. Return along a good mountain road past the typical ‘pueblos blancos’, or white villages. Day 4 La Cruz del Muerto Today we tackle a challenging ascent by forest trail to the ‘cross of the dead’ before a 10km descent. Day 5 Granada A free day to relax. Optional visit to Granada and Alhambra Palace or self-guided cycle routes in the surrounding area. Day 6 Nature Trails We cycle trails through the Natural Park, returning to Collado pass before a long and steady descent passing several ravines and changing landscapes to

the abandoned quarry of Frigiliana. Day 7 The Caliph We save our most challenging route until last. The name of the route is taken from the Arabic infl uence of the region and in particular the village of Salares through which we pass. After the village we head back into the Natural Park. The total ascent today is 1371m although alternative easier self-guided routes are possible. Day 8 Tour ends Malaga airport.

Accommodation Family run hotel in Canillas
We stay at a family run, rustic hotel at the entrance of the small village of Canillas de Albaida. The farm house was only recently converted into a seven bedroom Posada in 2012. Rooms are cosy, comfortable and air conditioned. Facilities include a swimming pool (open May to October) and communal room with a large terrace and views over the avocado fi nca. A small spa is available to guests in the nearby sister hotel at an additional charge.

Accommodation: 7 nights Hotels. Meals: 7 breakfasts are included. Tour staff: Explore Tour Leader and driver(s). Cycling Details: On this tour we cycle 173 km in fi ve days (an average of 35 km per day). Typical climb each day between 700 and 1000m. Our route follows bike trails and quiet backroads (80% on park trails, 20% tarmac roads). Day 7 is the most challenging route and there are alternative easier self-guided options. There is a back up vehicle in case of emergencies. We have graded this trip as moderate to challenging. Off road mountain bike experience is essential and a good level of fi tness is required as the region is mountainous with some steep inclines. Group size: Generally 8 to 14.
