Following the route of ancient pilgrims we cycle sections of the legendary trail to Santiago de Compostela – the resting place of Saint James. The trip follows the last 200 kilometres of the scenic route through northern Spain, starting on the high plains of the Castilian meseta. We ascend into the fertile region of the Bierzo and traverse the rolling hills of Galicia to the delightful city of Santiago.
8 day tour itinerary
Day 1 Join tour in Bilbao. Admire the remarkable architecture of the Guggenheim Museum. Day 2 Leon Drive to medieval Leon for lunch. Cycle to Astorga across a section of the Meseta Plains. Day 3 Bierzo Cross the fertile region of the Bierzo hills. Stop at the Cruz de Ferro ‘Iron Cross’ at 1482m, the highest point along the trail where pilgrims deposit a stone in prayer. Day 4 Gateway to Galicia Drive to the scenic town of O’Cebreiro where unusual, round, stone houses and thatched roofs mark the entry into Galicia. Cycle to Tricastela and continue to Samos. Days 5/6 Rolling hills of Galicia Cycle through unspoilt rolling landscape passing medieval villages. Day 7 Santiago Reach the

fi nal destination of the route. Explore the city including the cathedral. In the afternoon you are free to enjoy the city’s magnifi cent architecture. Day 8 Tour ends in Santiago.

Route and Terrain: On this tour we cycle 280 km over six days (an average of 47 km per day) with a further optional 33 km available on day 4.. The route is mainly on tarmac tracks. The fi rst day of cycling is relatively fl at and the subsequent fi ve days across the Bierzo hills and rolling hills of Galicia inevitably involve frequent uphill and downhill sections. We recommend you are fi t in order to enjoy the route. Maps will be provided for cyclists to travel individually or in groups while the tour leader drives the luggage vehicle, except on days 6 and 7 when the leader will cycle with the group. There is a back up vehicle for emergencies. We have graded this route as ‘moderate’. Group size: Generally 10-16.
