ASIP FORWARD The Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Professionals (ASIP) and the National Fetal Infant and Mortality Review Program (NFIMR) share a long- standing history of collaboration and mutual support. We are pleased to deepen our partnership with the release of Voices from the Community.


The publication is based on a series of panel discussions conducted by ASIP at the NFIMR annual conferences over the course of nearly ten years. Voices from the Community is unique—it is drawn from personal experiences and provides insight about the rituals and practices that guide grief in each culture. Through the panel presentations, we learn how all people are shaped to some extent by the culture into which they are born. This publication helps us understand that the human manifestation of grief is very much a product of culture.


The reader will learn how families adapt the beliefs and values of their culture to meet their own unique experiences, needs, and situations. The text under- scores the importance of understanding and assisting bereaved parents and offers practical, hands-on advice for providers. Those who support bereaved families are encouraged to hear that in-depth knowledge about every culture may not be necessary or possible. However, providers can still be extremely helpful by actively listening and inquiring about what the family needs and then modifying care based on their input.
