Overhanging Trees/Hedges Roads Scotland Act 1984
If a tree overhangs the highway or footway, causing a danger by obstructing the passage of vehicles or pedestrians or interfering with sight lines or lights, the highway authority may require
the owner or occupier to deal with the tree in order to remove the problem.
There are
similar provisions for dealing with dead or diseased trees, which are likely to fall on the highway or footpath. If the owner fails to comply, then the highway authority may do the work and charge the owner.
Tree Planting for the
Jubilee Woods Project Garnock Valley Allotment Association members turned out this Easter Monday morning to plant trees from the Woodland Trust’s national Jubilee Woods tree planting project to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Barrier hedging of dog rose and blackthorn was planted interspersed with trees of crab apple, elder and hazel around the perimeter of the site. All the species planted will provide berries or fruit which can be used in a variety of jellies, jams etc. Additional trees will be planted between the plots to give the site a more mature appearance and act as a windbreaker.
Fill Your Garden With Beautiful, Buzzy Creatures
Even the tiniest garden can be a haven for butterflies. Gardens managed with butterflies in mind will also help our rapidly declining population of bees. The greater the variety of plants, the more species will visit. You can provide a main attraction by planting a nectar-rich border that flowers from spring to autumn. Some of the best plants are buddleia, achillea, campanula, nepeta, sedum, verbena and plants with daisy flowers. Massed chives send a strong signal to butterflies as does the combination of roses and lavender.
The floribunda rose ‘Fragrant Delight’ is a tough and hardy plant, with only small trusses of flowers, but each is a classic bloom, large with a perfect high centre on first opening. This lovely rose needs to be in full sun and responds to lavish feeding.
Lavender is the perfect partner to the rose and both will attract bees, butterflies, and insects.
The Buddleia
[Butterfly Bush] is a fast-growing and undemanding shrub. It prefers full sun and a well-drained light/moist soil. The long heavy flowering heads are made up of tiny purple flowers that transform the bush, making a stunning display for four to six weeks and attracting clouds of butterflies.
