kilmacolm & quarriers Award for Kilmacolm’s Cargill Centre
Kilmacolm Civic Trust is delighted that Kilmacolm’s Cargill Centre is one of five Scottish projects to receive an award from the Scottish Civic Trust’s 2012 My Place Award scheme. Started in 2010, the aim of the scheme is to identify projects or buildings that have had a positive impact in a local neighbourhood and that have delivered positive benefits to that community. Entries in all categories are assessed on their architectural, heritage and/or place making benefits.
The Cargill Centre was nominated for the award by Kilmacolm Civic Trust and was awarded a Commendation. “The building has a great lively feel, lovely and light. The whole project has regenerated and rejuvenated the centre of Kilmacolm.” The award was presented to Helen Calvert, Chair of Kilmacolm New Community Centre Company and Harry Phillips of Architects Holmes Miller, by Derek Mackay, Minister for Local Government and Planning, at a ceremony in Glasgow (picture right).
There were nineteen entries from across Scotland including
community
centres, churches, and burgh halls – even a pair of gates – and KNCCC and their architects, Holmes Miller, are to be congratulated on this recognition of their tremendous achievement.
Drystone walling run by the West of Scotland branch
The weekend of March 30th / April 1st saw the first of this years drystone walling training courses run by the West of Scotland Branch of the Drystone Walling Association. As usual this was done at out training site at the Braes in Kilbarchan where another 15 metre section of farmland wall was stripped to the ground and rebuilt by an enthusiastic team of trainees under the watchful eyes of 3 DSWA instructors, aided ( or hindered!) by 3 other branch members who were working on a corner section nearby.
The photos show the wall from level to the finished structure, with the tired but happy participants.
Further courses will be run on June 23rd/24th and September 15th/16th. If anyone is interested in joining a course, details can be found on the website www.
wsdswa.org.uk/#/training/4550429337
In addition the Branch will be giving a demonstration of walling techniques at Kilmacolm Show on May 12th and will be
taking part in the Gardening Scotland Show at Ingliston on June 1-3rd.
Local projects this year will include a continuation of the sandstone feature build at Ocean Terminal at Greenock as well as a bridge build at Lennox Golf Course, and the finishing touches to the Listed barn at Auchendrain Museum at Inverary.
Handicraft Group
We meet every Tuesday morning in the Community Centre to knit, sew, crochet or do any other handcraft. We also knit blankets, jackets and hats for the Premature Baby Unit at Paisley Maternity. If you are looking for something to do, please come along and join us - you will be made most welcome.
12 trainees from around the West of Scotland and one who came all the way from Sutherland were initiated into the craft of walling. After an initial health & safety talk, Chairman Norman Muir gave a brief introduction to the structure of a typical drystone wall and how it is constructed. The trainees were then let loose on a section of derelict wall to strip it down to the foundations and lay out the specialist throughband and cope stones. After levelling the ground the foundation stones were laid in place then the wall gradually rebuilt up to the throughband level on the first day.
In view of the loss of an hours sleep due to the clocks going forward on Saturday night, Sundays start was deferred until 9.30am after which the rest of the wall was built to the correct level. A fun hour was spent playing “hunt the coping stones” as many of the original top stones from the old wall had gone missing over the previous years so suitable stones had to be scavenged from around the fields.
A good weekend was had by all in cold but clear weather and after the obligatory class photograph in front of the completed wall everyone went home tired but happy & now with the knowledge of how to build a wall correctly.
