Brighter Bridge Of Weir - Hot Or What?

Whatever the weather may be like when you read this, things have certainly been hotting up for Brighter Bridge of Weir. The group have taken delivery of more street planters and barrier baskets, virtually doubling the number in place last year.

As Alice Johnstone, the group’s Chair, said, “We approached the contacts we made last year and, once again, they have been enormously helpful. Renfrewshire Council’s Environmental Services department have provided the street planters and have helped us to source the plants and shrubs we’ll have in place for the coming summer.”

The support of local residents and business is helping to keep up the group’s momentum. Secretary Hamish Henderson told us that help has come from all

quarters. “When we approached those shops and offices in Main Street to ask if we could locate the planters outside their premises, they didn’t just say yes, they got actively involved. They will be helping us to maintain them throughout the year. It really has been an inspirational show of community spirit.”

The group’s success last year in receiving lottery funding and local area grants will be built upon this year. Their aims extend well beyond the barrier baskets at the Torr Road junction and the planters through Main Street. The developments outside Gryffe Motors and at the cycle track approach in Torr Road will be enhanced, and other projects, such as the River Gryffe walkway are being considered for a major make-over.

Alice added, “As a group we are passionate about improving the village, but we would be able to achieve very little if it wasn’t for the support of the community and the huge amount of work put in by our many dedicated but anonymous helpers.”

Many of the businesses and individuals who have helped Brighter Bridge of Weir are acknowledged on the group’s website. If you would like to help in any way, please visit the site to find out how: www.brighterbridgeofweir. org.

This will be my last report to the Advertizer as a Councillor for Ward 10 as, after 13 years, I have decided to stand down at the Council Election on May 3rd. I can, however, confirm that the position of

the SNP Group in Renfrewshire is firmly against the sale of Moss Road Park in Bridge of Weir. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my successors all the best for the future.
