St Fillans Primary School
Our P6 pupils have now completed their Buddy Training and our new entrants will meet their “Big Buddies” on Wednesday 30th May and Wednesday 6th June (1.30pm - 2.45pm).
Last term Bishop Philip Tartaglia visited the school and spent some additional time with those pupils preparing for their Sacraments (P4 & P7). Professor ECO also visited our younger pupils. He was impressed by their knowledge and they worked hard to win golden stars which eventually resulted in them being presented with an ECO Certificate for the school. We also welcomed a Fairtrade Cotton Farmer from India who came along to to tell us more about how Fairtrade helps her family and her community.
Several of our pupils attended and won medals at the Burns Federation Competition. Well done to Jonathan, Juliet, Jasmine and Millie for representing the school.
They
recited poetry, sang and played musical instruments. Jasmine took first place in her heat and went on to win first place in the 7-12 years age group for her fantastic piano playing (see photos) & was she presented with a beautiful crystal trophy. Two tennis teams from our P6 class went forward to compete in the Strathgryffe Interschools Annual Challenge. St Fillan’s took first place for the first time ever after competing in a nail-biting tiebreak for the top prize.
Our Annual Talent Show took place during the last week of term and was organised from start to finish by our Pupil Council. Our overall winner was Joanna Kelly for her solo singing. Runners up were Matthew Sweeney (for his street dancing) and our resident girl band “Nine Direction” (Ella, Niamh, Rachel, Eimear, Libby- Jo, Rachel, Emily, Charlotte & Olivia). Positive feedback was given to every act by our “head judge”, Tony who concluded the show by singing a song himself, much to the delight of the pupils and staff. Our thanks also go to fellow judges Jennifer and James and to all pupils who took part in the initial auditions. We were also entertained on the day by Mr Keenan and the talented members of our guitar club.
During Lent our House Captains and Vice Captains organised a range of activities including a sponsored obstacle course, a staff car wash and a bring and buy sale. The final amount raised was over £1500 which will be sent to their chosen charities. They also organised our annual “Backpack Appeal” for Scottish Charity Mary’s Meals. Log onto

We are currently building on our previous health and wellbeing work by carrying out a 3 week mini-topic on the Olympics in partnership with our cluster schools (St Anthony’s, St David’s, Our Lady of Peace and St Margaret’s). P7 are looking forward to their final primary school trip later this month when they head to the borders to spend 3 days outwardbound at Lockerbie Manor, with Manor Adventure staff, as well as 3 staff members from the school. We also have our Sport’s Day, Summer Fayre, First Communions and Confirmations to look forward to this month. Finally, our congratulations to go Mrs McKay who gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Easter Sunday. Baby Maria and Mrs McKay are both doing well and will be popping in to see us later in the term.

WOODLANDS ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT AFTER CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS THEY ARE STILL MOVING FORWARD WITH THE COMPLETION AND OPENING OF THEIR NEW PURPOSE BUILT NURSERY.
Rosie and Alison, owners of Woodlands Day Nursery have always appreciated the wonderful outdoor environment that has surrounded Woodlands and now they have finally achieved their goal to match the outdoor environment with a state of the art indoor environment.
The new Nursery building is not just a wonderful “space” for the children but also staff and parents, as it will now have extra facilities to ensure everyone feels welcomed and can enjoy their visit or stay at Woodlands. The new build is set in a conservation area and has met all European O2 omission guidelines to ensure it is also an Eco friendly Nursery using underfloor heating from an air source vent pump and the lighting is high frequency with piros sensors which all will reduce 02 omissions.
All playroom windows are low level and along with Velux windows this will enable the children to appreciate all seasons and the surroundings they are in and feel like they are outdoors even when they are indoors!
However, the outdoors is where Woodlands heart has always been and while working alongside the forestry commission last year there vision is to progress on everything they have learned to have outdoor play areas which not only are exciting and adventurous for the children but also compliment and benefit from the wonderful setting.
