Scottish Boys Championship

While there was disappointment with the early exit of the bulk of the Renfrewshire boys competing in this prestigious competition at Murcar, this was more than compensated by the performance of the boys who survived the early rounds – Fraser Lauder (Paisley), Colin Edgar (Cochrane Castle), Martin McCorkell (Gleddoch) and Paul Reilly (Lochwinnoch).

Fraser made it to round three but was beaten 4 and 3 by Lewis Bain from Turnhouse. Colin disposed of his first three opponents convincingly – 5 and 4, 5 and 4 then a great 6 and 5 victory over Ross White from Muckhart. However, in round four he bowed out when Andrew Burgess of Nairn beat him on the seventeenth green. Martin also had a good tournament which included a great 5 and 3 victory over Gavin Petrie (Forfar) but was unlucky to draw the eventual semi finalist, Connar Cook, in the fourth round.

The lone survivor into round five was seventeen year old Paul Reilly whose cheerful confidence had been enough to see off his previous four opponents very convincingly - including a massive 6 and 5 win against the fancied Ben Craggs from Glenbervie. He started well in his match against eventual finalist Ewan Scott and was two up after 7 holes. He then started to find bunker after bunker and, by the sixteenth, the match was all square. A birdie from Ewan followed by a great par into the wind at seventeen was enough to end Paul’s run but it was an excellent performance and one which will give him great confidence for the future.

Scottish Order Of Merit

Renfrewshire Golf Union squad members Craig Watson (East Renfrewshire) and Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) have made a great start in the race to top the Order of Merit. The opening event was at Craigmillar Park and Craig, the former British Amateur Champion and Craigmillar winner in 1994, was in a strong position after opening rounds of 68 and 66. He slipped a bit with a third round 70 to be four shots behind but an outstanding final round of 64 was good enough for second place behind Graeme Robertson of Glenbervie.

Matthew started well with an opening round of 65 but a second round 72 left him well down the field. However, rounds of 67 and 66 on the final day were good enough to give him a fourth spot and valuable Order of Merit points.

A long way to go but an encouraging start for both.

Langbank Bowling Club

On Saturday 7th April, Matthew Gillespie, the President of Langbank Bowling Club welcomed all those who had gathered for the official opening of the new 2012 season and his wife, Lynne, threw the first bowl after which she was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Thereafter, all the rinks were in use as the members

enjoyed a pleasant afternoon … and the rain even stayed away.

Langbank Bowling Club was formed more than 100 years ago and is not affiliated to any District or League. It is a very friendly and relaxed club that has its own regular weekly games at set times and also runs its own internal competitions and thus there is no pressure to perform to any standard. Current members have a wide range of ability, from beginners to proficient.

Gryffe Hillwalking Club 18th March - Lawers Group Zumba Kilbarchan

The wonderful ladies from Zumba Kilbarchan raised a staggering £900 at their recent Ladies Night, held in Kilbarchan Bowling Club. As well as music and dancing, there were a number of other activities on the evening including a Silent Auction, “Guess the Hunk” and “Guess the Number of Sweeties”. Thanks to all who helped on the night and to all who donated raffle prizes. This evening was only one in a series of fundraising events run by Gemma, Wilma and Pamela for the charity Radio Lollipop, which is based in Yorkhill Children’s Hospital. Radio Lollipop plays an important part in the recovery of a child whilst they are in Yorkhill. The radio station keeps their spirits up and provides them with a valuable source of entertainment. Radio Lollipop is staffed entirely by volunteers and relies on charitable donations to keep the station going each year. To date the Zumba Kilbarchan ladies have raised £2750 this year with another Zumbathon currently being planned for the end of June. A bright but breezy and cold day promised good walking conditions for the fifteen members who elected to join our last bus outing of the season - it is car trips from now on ! We split into several parties, two heading for the Corbett Beinn nan Oighreag, one for the Corbett Meall Luaidhe, four for the Tarmachan Ridge, one for the munro An Stuc and the remainder for the munro Beinn Ghlas. We were all treated to excellent views interspersed with biting winds and a brief show shower on the tops. We had ‘refreshments’ at the Bridgend Hotel before heading for home.
