Houston Community Council
The Community Council is, in partnership with Renfrewshire Council’s Planning Department, continuing to discuss possible future local projects to enhance the village, following the successful completion of the Mercat Cross project, which has seen a general enhancement of the area, a wall repaired, and two bench seats provided. Further projects now under consideration include the provision of seating at the Craigend Yew Tree, improved sign posting to places of interest within the village, and seating along walkways (e.g. at Riverside).
In conjunction with these ongoing discussions, the Community Council has taken delivery of a number of leaflets produced by Renfrewshire Council entitled “Renfrewshire Village Walks-Houston”, detailing the many interesting features and noteworthy buildings within the village. A number of these leaflets have been placed within the Carrick Centre and Village Hall, while you can also obtain a copy by emailing the Community Council at
houstoncommunitycouncil@yahoo.com .
In recent meetings discussion has taken place with regard to crime statistics in the locale, and there is a suggestion that some incidents are not being reported to the police. The Community Council strongly recommends to residents that any suspicious looking incidents are reported, otherwise there is little chance of the people responsible being brought to task.
The Community Council will be entering into discussions with the neighbouring Bridge of Weir Community Council to discuss the mechanism for working together on projects and issues of mutual interest. The current issue arising over proposals to build a supermarket and houses in Bridge of Weir is one such example where a partnership approach will serve both communities better than individual strategies, while a possible future project at the River Gryffe Lade, in partnership with the Planning Department, represents another possible example where by working together, the whole will be greater than the sum of the individual constituents.
Houston Community Council meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the Carrick Centre, meetings commencing at 7.30pm, and new members are welcome. All meetings are open to the general public to attend.

Dickens Delights at the Kirk Carnival
Don’t forget Houston’s biggest day out of the year on Saturday May 12th - the ’What the Dickens’ themed Kirk Carnival celebrating the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth! Come in fancy dress! Take part in the fancy dress parade from the Kirk at 12.15pm, walking to the Kirk Hall where the Carnival Queen will be crowned.
Enjoy the fun of the stalls, games, slides and bouncy castle! You’ll have your chance to buy home baking, plants, tablet, fudge and jam! (You know you don’t want to miss out!) Celebrate Dickens in character – pick from Oliver Twist, Pickwick, Scrooge, David Copperfield and so many others! Identify your favourite characters and join in the fun.
Watch out for the Diamond Jubilee Celebration run by the Kirk Social Committee on Sunday 3rd June after morning service in the church hall. A lunch is being planned and the hall will feature a large screen to watch the Thames Pageant at 2pm. Price and tickets will be available as soon as lunch options are finalised.
We hope primary school aged children enjoyed the Starzone Easter Eggstravaganza on Thursday 12th April. This has been another of our school holiday events run in the Church Hall. Keep watching for summer holiday activity days to follow!
