Tom’s Karting Blog
Since my column on La Conca, the final two rounds of the WSK Masters have taken place. The first at Sarno, in the shadow of Vesuvius near Naples, and the second at Castelletto, near Milan. At Sarno once again the chassis was nowhere near the pace, so it was a very good surprise to finish 9th in one of the heats, recording the Teams best KF3 result all weekend and to be on the pace during the race. The pre-Final started well although after a few laps I was smashed from behind and my bumper got stuck on the wheel, ruining it and hence my race. The bumper finally ripped apart but I was way down.
At Castelletto, I had hope as I have actually been to the track twice before. In the first heat I was involved in a big crash, hitting a kart flat out round a right hander at 90kph. The front bumper and side pod were dented, steering column jammed and bent, the tyre was ripped off its rim and the chassis was bent. On the flip side, I also recorded the KF3 Team’s best result of the weekend with a 7th in one of the heats after starting from grid 18! But my pre-Final jinx hit again and I retired after being hit off and getting whiplash after smashing into a fence. I’m hoping to have more luck next time out!
Birel are working hard to sort our set-up teething problems. The main problem has been that the first few races have been so close together that there is little time for race-testing. Effectively that is what the Masters became for us. We have been on the podium in the gearbox classes and are now having podium success with the KF2 equipment. The Italian KF3 Team members are testing with Birel between races, so hopefully we will be contesting at the front very soon!

Injury Time
Injury is an unfortunate part of exercise and sport, it can strike without warning and detract from all your efforts to date. You can of course greatly reduce your chances of injury by doing core stability and strengthening exercises.
Rehabilitation is a huge part of what I do and when I meet with a new client in need of my help, there is often two types of help needed, the physical and the psychological. The physical is fairly straight forward: make me pain free and get me back to full fitness. The psychological is a little bit trickier. When we get injured we initially believe a weakness has been discovered which will be there forever. This thought pattern leads us to believe that the injury will re occur, so we compensate by holding ourselves differently or guarding ourselves more readily. Referred injury - an injury caused by the existence of a previous or current injury is common. You have no doubt heard about someone twisting an ankle and a week later they have developed low back pain.
Injuries(excuse the pun) fall into a number of categories. Soft tissue injuries, repetitive strain injuries, breaks, cuts and abrasions.
Regardless of the injury type, remember to seek out the advice of a doctor or physiotherapists and then speak to your Personal trainer about alternatives to your training routine. If you are currently suffering from an injury, why not visit my website for some free advice to get you back training.

With just two games left in a tough and extended season for a young and developing Birkmyre team, thoughts are turning to the end of year AGM, a mini tour and of course to next season.
There are many positives to take away from the current season, we have had an influx of young players, all of whom are enthusiastic, devoted to the development and success of the club, and full of potential for years to come. In fact with the exception of stalwart Wallace Muir a majority of the squad are aged between 17 and 21!
First up after the end of the season, on 28th April, Birkmyre RFC are hosting a touring team from Belfast High School Former players. This is the club that showed the Birky Boys such a good time on our tour to Belfast a couple of years ago. The day will start with a scratch game at Birkmyre Park, well worth coming down to watch. Afterwards all are invited back to our club sponsor The River Inn for some fun and games, and more than likely some good singing!
The next date in the Birkmyre diary is the club AGM Friday 4th May, again at the River Inn. This event is open to any paid up member of the club. This is usually a fantastic evening with wonderful food, one or two drinks and some great speakers. This year we have Len Murray a retired Glasgow Lawyer. Len is widely recognised as one of the country’s top after-dinner speakers. He has spoken throughout the UK and on four continents, from Edmonton in the West to Singapore in the East. He has been variously described as: “hilarious”, “incredibly funny”, “brilliant”, “highly entertaining”, “superb”, and “side-splitting”. Should be Fun!
The final event of the season is a mini tour to the Rugby Rocks Festival down in Yorkshire between the 17th-20th June.
http://www.rugbyrocks7s. com/yorkshire/, There are currently 20 or so guys going down, however if you are a player or supporter who wishes to go please contact Jonny Dobson on 07500704798.
Please come down and support us and if you are a current or ex player of the game why not join us for training every Tuesday at 7.30pm at Birkmyre Park, Knockbuckle Road, Kilmacolm.
If you are interested in playing please contact Jon Harris on 07960151015 or team manager Peter Haveron on 07815 090839.
Houston Jogging Buddies
We meet every Monday night, usually for a 6.30pm start, in the Houston Village Hall. We are a very friendly group of joggers and runners who run for fun and fitness and can help you get to the starting line of a 5K, 10K or even a half or full marathon. However, if you just want to get fit and enjoy the company of other joggers, you’re equally welcome.
