Kilmacolm Rock Choir
The Kilmacolm Rock Choir surprised local residents in the village with a rendition of ‘Dancing in the Street’ outside the Kilmacolm Library recently. Shopkeepers and passers by stood and watched in amazement as the performance unfolded in the village square (in the style of a flashmob). In fact, once the song was finished and the choir members were putting their coats back on and getting ready to walk away they were asked to sing the song again - which they did! A flashmob is gathering of people who (in this case) were singing and dancing in a ‘spontaneous manner’ although in fact everything has been very much rehearsed in advance!
The impromptu open air performance was in fact a chance for the choir to practice ahead of a huge flashmob event that was taking place by Rock Choir as part of the Sport Relief Event in Glasgow a few days later.
Joining the Kilmacolm Rock Choir were 700 Rock Choir members from across Central Scotland who gathered in George Square for a flashmob performance of ‘Dancing in the Street’ to raise money for Sport Relief. Rock Choir Music Leader Jennifer said’ “It was a really fantastic day and the choir members were excited about the performance as well as feeling a little nervous about singing and dancing outside. It takes confidence to be able to do something like this however I made sure everyone was well rehearsed so they knew exactly what to do. Its the reaction of the public that is the best part in many ways as they are simply going about their everyday business when all of a sudden someone next to them bursts into song and dance!”
This performance in Glasgow City Centre was in fact part of a UK-wide synchronised performance of the same song which saw over 38 Rock Choirs take part in flashmobs at exactly the same time on the same day raising over £10,000 for Sport Relief! Jennifer said, “It was such a great achievement by all our choir members who were able to prepare and take part in the same exciting event despite being in different locations across the country. These things do take quite a lot of organising behind the scenes though and thankfully everything went according to plan on the day!” Members of the public enjoyed recording the events unfold on their phones with lots of footage available now on YouTube for those who want to see some of the flashmobs from across the country.
