Howwood Fete Olympics
Saturday 16th June - The Village Fete will take place in the grounds of Howwood Primary School from 1pm until 4pm. Entry fee is £1 for adults, 50p for children and free to tots. Do come along and enjoy the fun.
This being an Olympic year the Fete will have an Olympic theme.
For those of you who will miss seeing the Olympic torch in Lochwinnoch on 8th June, there will be an opportunity to take part in Howwood’s own version of this. Shortly before the Fete opening, torch bearers will run through the village and up to the Fete, arriving at around 1pm to light our Olympic ‘Flame’. Watch local press for details of the route. If you would like to be one of the torch bearers contact the Fete organisers, details below.
Special Howwood Olympic races will be held on the day for children of the various age groups complete with medal ceremonies.
In the weeks running up to the Fete, special ‘Olympic’ medals are likely to be found in and around Howwood so if you see one of these medals and you are 16 years old or younger then pick up the medal and bring it along to the Fete to redeem your gift.
The medals will have GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE values and the gift will correspond to that value. GOLD medals are worth £10, SILVER are worth £5 and BRONZE medal holders get their pick from a giant tub of sweets. All children bringing one of these medals along to the Fete will receive a gift.
As a clue as to where you might find the medals; Seek me high, seek me low, as to school or nursery you to and fro’ Seek me where you play and where best friends meet, Seek me where you love to eat, Take me to the Fete and for my metal do exchange for cash or sweets.
There will be a last opportunity to purchase raffle tickets at the fete. The raffle draw will take place on Sunday evening 17th June at Bowfield Hotel & Country Club, Club Room Bar at 7.30pm and all are welcome to attend.
All proceeds from the Fete fund community projects or go to organisations within the village and help pay for events like the senior citizens Scottish Night. Any voluntary organisation within the village may ask the Community Council for financial assistance at any time.

The annual nationwide Christian Aid Week will take place during 13th - 19th May. The traditional red envelope delivered to your door will then be collected by one of our eighty volunteers. If you are a taxpayer, please complete the Gift Aid form attached to the envelope, this will make your donation worth an additional 25p for every £1 you donate. Give a little, give a lot, every pound makes a difference. Christian Aid works directly with 500 local partner organisations in 47 countries, helping people of all faiths or none. Christian Aid challenges people in power to tackle climate change, it challenges tax-dodging by unscrupulous multinational companies, but most importantly it fights to bring an end to poverty around the world. Please show your support for the work of Christian Aid during Christian Aid Week. If you can help by volunteering to be a collector, please contact
Dr.Peter McEnhill, Chairman for Kilmacolm and Quarriers area, or committee secretary Jill Russell.
As I write my last article before the elections there are a few events coming up which I will be hoping to attend - Port Glasgow High School annual music show, a concert being held by the WOOPI singers in aid of the Speech and Language Unit (SALU), International Workers Memorial Day and two charity events.
As we come to the end of the five year council term I would like to thank the electorate of Kilmacolm, Quarrier’s Village and Port Glasgow for having elected me in 2007 and for giving me the opportunity to represent you over that time. Over the last five years I have met and come to know many interesting people and have been asked to take up a great many and varied issues for my constituents during that time. It has been an honour and a privilege to be one of your councillors over the past five years.
Anyone wanting to contact me can do so by phoning me at my council office on 01475-712727 or on my mobile phone 07747 765 839, or by emailing me at
