reductions seen in the sector. Additionally, SymphonyIRI
Group’s research shows that consumers spent almost £117 million on a variety of ready meals, £27 million on fruit bags and over £11 million on instant hot cereal. Tim Eales, director of strategic insight at the SymphonyIRI Group, commented on the findings: “The data shows that there is definite evidence of an economic downturn as consumers look to save. In 2011, consumers spent an additional £31.6 million on hair colourant whilst more than £20 million extra was spent on baking margarine and dry cake mix. Also, an additional £37 million pounds was spent on cheddar cheese, indicating that consumers recognise it as a cheaper source of protein.”

Unite reacts to Unilever profits in pension row
Following Unilever’s announcement in early February, stating that the FMCG giant generated profits of almost €5 billion, Unite has reacted, saying that with these profits, reasonable pensions should be possible for the company’s workers. Jennie Formby, Unite's
support the industry in these vital areas. Chief Secretary to the
Treasury, Rt Hon Danny AlexanderMP, said at the event: “The food and drink industry has shown great resilience and adaptability in recent years. This coalition government is keen to support the future success of the industry by creating the right conditions for the sector to thrive.”
national officer, said: "These profits are mind-blowing, especially in a time of recession. This will make people stop and think twice about Unilever's attempt to claim that they cannot deliver the decent pension scheme our members have been saving for. "Once again we are reminded
that big business profiteering is simply out of control - and that the spoils are enjoyed by only a rare few at the top. “Paul Polman, the CEO, takes
home almost 300 times what the average Unilever worker earns. Unilever can address this grotesque disparity, starting
with honouring their promises to the workers and their pensions. Workers will be rightly furious if the comparatively small sums their pensions need now disappear into the pockets and wallets of Polman and his board. “This dispute is hurting
Unilever's reputation. The company can well afford to keep its promise to workers. What they cannot afford to do is allow the public to regard them as dishonourable. Unilever management must waste no more time - sit down with us to talk about a fair solution” Just as FMCG News went to
press, Unilever management had in fact agreed to engage in talks with conciliation service ACAS, the national officers of the joint trade unions Unite, USDAWand GMB to discuss the dispute. Unilever workers at 12 sites
across the UK have been taking part in several strikes, the most recent being 11 days of rolling action at the end of January.
