On Thursday 26th January, I attended the prestigious Product of the Year Awards in central London at the rather beautiful OneMarylebone.

T

he awards, sponsored by The Sun and Bestmagazine, and run in association with TNS, aimto celebrate the best our

industry has to offer. The awardwinners have triumphed following scrutiny fromthe trade press (includingmyself) on the jury day, aswell a huge consumer questionnaire that saw12,000 customers decide the finalwinners. On the night, wewere entertained by

comedian Hugh Dennis as our host, who, as it turns out, used to be a brandmanager for Unilever, mainlyworking on the Lynx brand. He therefore, (so he said) “felt like one of us.”We also enjoyed a lovely dinner (whichwas, however, strangely lacking a dessert). Once the awards kicked off, the roombecame

alivewith choruses of cheers and boos.Winning themost awards on the nightwas Proctor& Gamblewith an impressive six accolades, including, in theGeneralCleaning category, Fairy PlatinumOriginalWashing-Up Liquid and in the Small Electrical category, theOral-B Triumph SmartGuide Electric Toothbrush. They alsowon with two ofmy favourites fromthis years’ awards, with, in theMulti-PurposeCleaning Products category, Flashwith Febreze andHerbal Essences HelloHydration Shampoo&Conditioner in the Shampoo&Conditioner category. Other noticeablewinners fromthe nightwere

Reckitt Benckiser, whowan four gongs including, in the Stain Removal category, Vanish

Sensitive, and, in the Dishwasher category, Finish Quantumwith Baking Soda. They also wonwithmy favourite product this year, in the Health Care category, Nuromol, the clever pain- killing productwhich combines both paracetamol and ibruprofen. Throughout the night, I was sat with the

lucky winners of the Feminine Care category, SCA Hygiene Products, and was very happy to see themtake home one of those prestigious red square awards. It was fair to say that they were very happy too! Whenwe turn to the food and drink categories,

winnerswere farmore dispersed than those in the non-food category (which, as it is clear fromthe box to the right)were dominated by a select few. In theChilledDaily category, Lactalis-Nestléwon for theirAero Finesse yoghurt (something I picked out as a potentialwinner inmy jury day report back in theNovember issue of FMCGNews), and in the Food category,McCains took home the award for thier Limited EditionWedges. In the Snack category, United Biscuitswon for their MedleyCereal Bars, whilst FMCGgiant Kraftwon in theCoffee category for their KencoMillicano Wholebean Instant. Sowe are nowdone for another year. Looking at

thewinners however, I dowish for asmuch diversification in food&drink as there is in non- food. The categories of ‘food’, ‘healthy food’, ‘snacks’ and ‘coffee’ just do not, inmy opinion, allowvariety in the awards.Howabout categories such as ‘soft drink’, ‘alcoholic beverage’, ‘chocolate’, ‘dairy’, ‘meat’, etc? With this, I think the awards could be truly representative of our fantastic industry.
