Newproducts fromTetra Pak Alexir fully operational after fire
Alexir Packaging, the packaging manufacture business of Alexir Partnership, managed to become fully operational at its new factory in Edenbridge, Kent just twelve weeks after a fire suddenly broke out on one of the printing machines last year. The fire resulted in the complete destruction of the company’s Crawley production facility. The first complete live production job to leave the new plant took place in February last year. The 40,000 sq ft purpose built print factory is approximately 33 per cent larger than the Crawley site. The new state of the art machinery in the new site includes Fuji pre- press, Komori print, Bobst cutting and creasing and Kohmann windowing, which all minimise lead times and give some of the best colour control and quality in print. Alexir Chairman Robert Davison said: “After what was a difficult initial three months for the business, I am delighted with our new premises at Edenbridge. Our factory provides increased capacity and the advanced machinery we have invested in certainly benefits our customers. We couldn’t have had such a smooth transition to these new premises without the commitment of our employees. I am also grateful to our customers and to competitors, to whom we outsourced over £1.5million of business, for their support during the changeover period. It was a huge relief to see cartons coming off the line after all we had been through and it really marked the return of Alexir Packaging. It’s almost unbelievable how far we came in just twelve weeks, especially if you factor in the disruption caused by the snow and 2010 Christmas break. Another problem was our workforce of 90. Some were happy to drive the distance and for the others, we purchased a minibus. As a result, we brought 99 per cent of them with us, including all of the key staff. We have a full disaster recovery plan for this type of situation and the management team reconvened the night of the fire to initiate it.Within 24 hours, we had fully-functioning offices within our offsite storage facility, and communications up and running with full IT recovery in place so we could service all customers as usual.” For more information call 01732 866 681 or visit

Tetra Pak, themultinational food processing and packaging company, announced two newproducts last year. The first, known as ConeValves (bottom), are for automatic discharge and dosing of powder directly from big-bags to containers, as, in any industrywhere you have to handle powder, bulk packaging seems to be the optimal solution to get rid of simple bags. However, once you have decided to go for bulk, you still need to find the right solution to unload powder fromthis formof packaging as dust emission during unloading is amajor issue.Howcan you reallymake sure that your unloading stations and the handing operations are really dust-tight?Who knows, in the future youmay have to use different packaging for your rawmaterials. Today, if youwork with big-bags, you cannot switch to containers unless you change unloading stations. The solutions usually proposed for dosing powder from bulk packaging are frequently quite ‘heavy’ however: butterfly valves, dosing screws or rotary
valves. All of these devices must be dismounted and cleaned, wasting a lot of time. ConeValves solve all these problems, however, as, for the first time, says Tetra Pak, common bulk packagings and containers can be fully integrated into automatic and contained production processes, enabling considerable savings in building investment, process equipment, packagingmaterial and
standardisation. Also, ConeValvesmean that packaging costs can be reduced thanks to the reuse of passive closure valves and the selective recycling and disposal of packaging
components. Also released by Tetra Pak in 2011was the TetraGuerin PaddleMixer (above), added to the company’s existing portfolio of Guerin Systems. Themixerwas developed to propose a complete line solution in the powder handling process. This newpaddlemixer, with its twin shafts, applies directly for the dairy industry; all sanitary requirements are integrated for large use inmany processes and the technology has already been proven for guarantees in terms ofmixing time and homogeneity. Themixer also proposes flexibility and compliancewith related functions for full-integrated process, allowing a most competitive solution rather than amere external addition.Other strengths of themixer includeATEX rating, compact construction, large &gentle cleaning accesses and high-speed performances.Options can be added as full openingwith no rest, quick dismounting for shafts and liquid spray addition. Size range goes from60L to 2000L. For more information call +33 241 632 626, email
