Fourth Smurfit Kappa Evo-Stikwin

Paper-based packaging manufacturer Smurfit Kappa UK is celebrating the fourth win in 12 months for its unique Evo-Stik ‘Sticks-Like’ promotional pack design, following wins at the 2011 Starpack Awards and UK Packaging Awards. The innovative E-flute, corrugated container has been awarded the highest International packaging tribute with a 2011-2012World Packaging Organisation, WorldStar award, in the Household category. Entries from 56 worldwide awards, representing 42 member countries of theWorld Packaging Organisation, qualified for consideration in the 2011-2012WorldStars, which are only presented to those packages that have already won recognition in qualifying national competitions.WorldStar awards are made on the judges' consensus that the pack is the most superior entry in its own right, and displayed the best execution and innovation in its

category. The clever ‘Sticks- Like’ promotional pack consists of a one-piece, wraparound blank, holding

three 290ml cartridges of Evo- Stik ‘Sticks-Like’ all weather adhesive. The packaging was designed to be equally as tough as the trade-only, high

performance adhesive it holds. It

into cartonboard Herbert Walkers have been, according to the company, a high quality printer for many years, with the focus of the business being in the commercial and greeting card sectors. However, times change and although Walkers claim to continue to have a strong customer presence within the card and commercial markets, the business has recognised that to continue to grow, they need to diversify. Cartonboard packaging is not the easiest sector to break into, but Walkers believe, due to where they have been and where they want to get to, it is the most obvious and logical step for the company. The board of Directors know that a limited apprenticeship within the sector will count against them, but has combatted this potential weakness by bringing in packaging professionals into key positions within the front end as well as throughout the production process. This will ensure that Walkers get to utilise years of packaging manufacturing experience that will be relayed first hand to a reportedly already highly skilled and competent workforce. Personnel is not the only area that has been strengthened by Walkers.

Significant investment in the shop floor working practices with the implementation of the British Retail Consortium Packaging Standard (BRC) has meant that already good housekeeping and quality procedures are elevated to the next level, and they are continuing to pursue further accreditations with ISO9001 Quality Management System and ISO14001 Environmental the next certifications they expect to achieve. Herbert Walkers believe that the key to their success in the packaging sector will not only be their ability to understand, manufacture and deliver against their new customers requirements, but to recognise that to stay competitive, continual investment is required. Significant investment has already been made with a new Bobst Expert Fold Gluer (with capacity, hot melt and full QC detection incorporated) being added to the Heidelberg Diana machine bought and installed last year. Further investment in die cutting secured a second Bobst cut

crease machine, which has given greater capacity and flexibility. These purchases supplement an already well-equipped department that also boasts two Bobst B1 sheet foilers. Herbert Walkers say that they have had prospective customers lining up waiting for the BRC accreditation, and are now enjoying good success. Sales Director, Andy Christie, is keen to push on “with more capacity available, we need to cultivate the accounts in the packaging sector that we have recently secured. However, with foiling and embossing expertise, we are now starting to attract those added value sales that require high quality print & finishing, and that we can manage totally in house without the need for third party involvement.” A new chapter for Herbert Walkers is now being written with cartons, commercial & greeting cards working hand in hand. For more information call 01274 531828, email info@herbertwalkers.co.uk or visit www.herbertwalkers.co.uk.

has reversible spring tabs at each pack end and secure, grip-point hand holes on the pack sides to prevent the heavy weight contents spilling out at the point of purchase. This simple solution is not only successful, but economical and sustainable as well. The single-piece pack replaces a traditional five-piece solution to triple pack promotions. Constructed from FSC certified, recyclable board, the pack offers a clear and uncluttered branding area for on-shelf recognition and promotional messages. Another Starpack and WorldStar success for Smurfit Kappa was in the beverages category with the Bag In Box - PouchUp®

, being used by

Manchester Drinks to package cocktails. A lightweight, free- standing pouch concept for beverages, PouchUp®

does not require a

secondary outer box. It has a dispensing tap, which extends the life of drinks after opening, a 100 per cent printed surface for branding and a carbon footprint of just 20 per cent of a traditional glass container. For more information call 0870 850 3877, email enquiries@smurfitkappa.co.uk or visit www.smurfitkappa.co.uk.
