Heinz saves tonnes

Heinz is saving 6 per cent of its average steamload per year at its baked bean factory inWigan by recovering energy fromeffluent using a systemdesigned and built by Spirax Sarco that was installed last year. Heinz Beanz begin by blanching the raw haricot beans in hot water. Starches and sugars leach fromthe beans into the water and agricultural residues are washed off. The blanching water must be purged regularly tomaintain the necessary quality. that either keep inert gasses in and oxygen out (gas flushed) or allowcontrolled ingress/egress of gases through filmmicro perforations. In either case, it is essential to ensure that the intendedmodified atmosphere of the pack is maintained and thatwhere the packaging materials are sealed, the seal is such that gases cannot permeate them. It is also important for freshmeats to retain any liquids within the pack, which again necessitates a high integrity seal. The speed capability of the HTS-BMis application dependant up to 200 packs perminute, but has so far been wrapping sausages at 50 packs aminute as requested by the customer. For more information call 01603 722280, email sales@redpack.co.uk or visit www.redpack.co.uk.
