ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION: SUSTAINABILITY
Nigel believes that robotics can play an impressive role in improving an FMCG brand’s attempts at sustainable practices
Transforming your sustainability
ABB’sNigel Platt explains howrobotic automation can help FMCGmanufacturers becomemore sustainable in theirwork
Sustainability has become something of a buzzword in modern FMCG processes. Often requiring investment to bring about the changes needed, it presents something of a double-edged sword for companies seeking to enhance their reputation through sustainable practices whilst enhancing their competitiveness through reduced costs.

ith the potential to completely transform production processes,
performance that can greatly improve competitiveness. Let me explain how. Fewwould argue that these are
tough times for FMCG manufacturing and processing
companies.Aswell as having to contendwith the toughest set of economic conditions in living memory, there are the added pressures of spiralling energy prices, rising input prices and fragile consumer
demand. Not only that, but today’s companies are subject to increasingly stringent legislation governing everything fromproduct quality through to minimising the environmental impact of their operations. Formany companies, the
concept of sustainability is the
latest addition to this list. The idea has been gathering momentumin recent years, as consumers have becomemore aware of the environmental issues associatedwithmanufacturing processes and produced goods. Basically defined, it promotes the idea of shaping our activities so thatwe can enjoy thematerials and resources, includingwater and energy, thatwe need both nowand in the future. Although it often requires
associated changes and investment, acting sustainably can invariably have a positive impact on consumer demand that can lead to improved sales, making it a valuable differentiator and competitive tool.
