Combat counterfeiting with Track&TraceModule
Pharmaceutical and cosmetics manufacturers can nowstrike back against the counterfeiters thanks to Atlantic Zeiser Group, a supplier of technology, modules and systemsolutions for industrial digital printing. The company’s Track&Trace module, which the supplier released last year, reportedly empowers brand owners by enabling themto counter the burgeoning counterfeiting threat and protect their brand reputation and revenue. According to Atlantic, Track& Trace integrates easily into a newor existing print packaging production line. Users can include all standard product tracking codes on the packaging. The codes include GS1, all types of numeric codes and 1-D and 2-D barcodes, which are used to check the legitimacy of the packaging and product online. Track&Trace also includes an optical checking system. In just one fast step cameras automatically read and verify the selected layout and check the digits. And the solution affords usersmaximum flexibilitywhen it comes to late-stage customisation. If the check code does notmatch the reference data, themodule rejects the packaging following the check. The assigned Track&Trace code can then be added to the packaging in a subsequent print run. For more information call +49 7465 291 0 or visit

END OF YEAR REVIEW Newinnovation in paper
Stora Enso succeeded in developing a speciality paper last year that enables the industry to reduce the share of non- renewable material required for packaging produced in injection-moulding processes. With the ‘InnoMould’ paper, which is produced at Uetersen mill, the film label is now replaceable by a paper label, reducing the amount of material of fossil origin. Other benefits include the paper combining with the plastic melt to an integral unit that is much stiffer than packaging made using a conventional film label. Also, the higher bearing pressure of the pot permits higher stacking and the walls of the pots can be produced with up to 50 per cent less material. That means brand owners can achieve a significant reduction in the per centage of non-renewable materials in their packaging. Formore information call 00 49 4122 719 680 or visit

Skanem’s
FINATwins FINAT last year announced the winners of their annual label awards competition where Skanem won four major prizes and several Highly Commended diplomas! In the ‘Marketing and End-users’ category, where all four major awards were won, Skanem Poznan S.A won in the Alcoholic Drinks sub-category with their label for Zubrówka 1L Czysta Wódka. On this design, the judges’ comments were: “The flexo, offset litho, screen and cold stamping processes have combined to produce an excellent label full of interest. The liberal use of cold foiling adds depth to the result.” In the Booklet sub-category, Skanem Poznan S.A won for their Oriflame Booklet. Of this win, the judges said: “It is getting more difficult to fit information onto normal single sided labels. This label overcomes this obstacle by producing a six page booklet with all the required ingredients information in addition to more than 30 languages describing the product. All of this has been achieved by over printing a red background in gold on a filmic substrate whilst keeping the text legible using a combination of letterpress
and offset litho printing
techniques.” The third price came from the Household Products sub-category, where Skanem Skurup AB won for their label for Sun. The judges’ comments were: “The quality of the flexo printing is very good with the holographic substrate adding depth to the label. The contrast of the silver substrate, the deep blue background and the red Sun logo gives an almost 3D effect.” Skanem’s final major win was in the Industrial
Products category, where Skanem Hobro A/S were
victorious with their Kosangas label. Of this entry, the judges said: “A straightforward screen printing job which has high light fastness and is weather resistant. The opaque white film substrate gives the label strength so that it lasts for several refills of the cylinder. Lamination gives the ultimate resistance to weather conditions.” Skanem is one of Europe's largest suppliers of self adhesive labels. Skanem's main focus is to supply high quality self adhesive labelling solutions to large national and multinational brand owners in Europe and Asia. In
