Showtime for a booming industry Rebecca Hubbard looks towards two of the biggest shows in the industry - Packaging Innovations and Foodex
As the start of 2012 starts to settle down, the showseason begins. Kicking things off is easyfairs’ Packaging Innovations showin Birmingham, then shortly after is Foodex, at the same venue later on inMarch. Both shows promise the latest products and innovations for the industry aswell as some thriving activity away from the exhibiton floor.

irst up, fromthe 29th February to the 1stMarch, the NEC in Birmingham
with innovations and solutions aplenty. I spoke to organisers easyfairs’MDMatt Benyon about the showand asked aboutwhat there is to look forward to this year. “Making its debut this year is Print Innovations, a newshow for end users and buyers of all print products,” saysMatt. “I feel that as print packaging has become increasinglymore important to the industry, it is therefore a good idea for it to have its own identitywithin our packaging showportfolio.”When asked about the success of the show’s seminars,Matt says that the BIG Packaging Debate topic – ‘Sustainable packaging: saving the planet or costing the earth’ – is something he’s very excited about. “We’ve got a great panel of speakers aswell, including Stuart LendrumfromSainsbury’s,”Matt

BirminghamNECwill again host, this time fromthe 25th to the 27th March. The show,which is the main UK showfor processing, packaging and logistics, has promised to be bigger and better than ever before. This year, it has dedicated elements for nearly every part of the sector, including bakery, logistics, dairy, beverage, fresh produce,meat and seafood, making it a key event for the
FMCGindustry. It also claims to be the only event that truly covers the entire food and drink supply chain. Away fromthe exhibition floor,
the OPS Advice Surgery, run by OPS Logistics Consultancy,will be offering free one-to-one advice on a variety of issues fromOPS’s expert consultants. Meanwhile, over at the Foodex
Theatre, the showwill be hosting leading speakers fromacross all sectors of the industry, including Campden BRI, theNational Association ofMaster Bakers, the National Federation ofMeat and Food Traders, the British Soft DrinksAssociation and The AnaerobicDigestion&Biogas Association.
