Bespoke loading bays solution
Stertil Stokvis designed a special loading bays solution to help logistics giant DHL transport catering trolleys to and from aircraft at London’s Heathrow airport last year. The £500,000 project required the company to design a bespoke solution to improve the ease and efficiency of the operation which is undertaken at DHL’s Colnbrook facility near Slough. “We needed a bespoke solution for our particular application,” explainsWarren Cobb, DHL’s Deputy Vice President, construction. “Following detailed evaluation of our requirements, Stertil Stokvis provided us with a working solution with free trial equipment and delivered everything they promised. Their flexible and partnering approach helped things run particularly smoothly and all installed equipment is covered by a full five-year warranty.” The finished project saw nine scissor lifts, 18 hinge lip dock levellers, 20 inflatable dock seals, 20 insulated Thermadoors and five high-speed RapidRoll doors installed at the Colnbrook site. AKrafty on-pack promotion
Last year, a printed high impact wide-widthmessage tape fromglobal leader Payne was used to deliver an on-pack promotion and enhance the branding of Kraft Club Social crackers in Brazil. The eye-catching tape carried a colourful promotionalmessage and was applied quickly and cost effectively to the outside of flow-wrapped packs of the Club Social crackers, deliveringmaximumimpact without the overall pack design having to be changed. Payne’s wide-widthmessage tape, says the company, is an idealmessagemediumformarkets including wrapped, bagged and frozen/chilled foods. Itmeansmanufacturers can run fixed- termpromotions and communications, or quickly change between them, without needing a full redesign. In Brazil, Kraft chose the wide widthmessage tape to promote its competition to win an iPhone 4. Formore information call 0115 975 9001,email sales@payne-

Multivac’s success
During 2011,Multivac released a number of new developments. First up, they developed a concept for integrating equipment for the high pressure treatment of foods into fully automatic packaging lines (below right). This meant, said the company, that for the first time, the high pressure treatment of foods within the packaging process could be seen as a viable option. The company claimed that as one of the first packaging manufacturers worldwide to master the process, that they can offer it not only for vacuum, but also for MAP packs. The necessary technical innovations have already been filed for patent, saysMULTIVAC. High pressure treatment packaged food is subjected for a sufficiently long period to a high pressure of up to 6,000 bar in a so-called autoclave,
which is a lockable and gas tight pressure container. Through this reliable process, microorganisms in the food such as listeria and salmonella are killed. As the process is conducted under ambient temperature, even heat-sensitive food products can be treated and this way be preserved for up to four times longer. At the same time the original nutritional value and taste remain nearly
unimpaired.MULTIVAC also launched a brand new design of tray sealing tool for simple air pack tray sealing applications (below left). The new die technology was combined with a new optimised infeed system to deliver significantly increased machine output from their new range. The whole machine has been tailored to take advantage of the benefits of ‘Smart Sealing’ technology. By shortening process timings and increasing the efficiency of the infeed
systemMULTIVAC have been able to increase the number of cycles perminute and by optimising tool lengths, have been able to further increase the T700 speed, efficiency and number of packs produced perminute. According to the company,MULTIVAC’s innovative die technology and simple construction is also cheaper andmore energy efficient, no longer requiring compressed air for sealing or requiring cooling water instead usingMULTIVAC’s energy efficient electric die lifting unit. Depending on the infeed mode, it is now possible with a T700 with Smart Sealing technology to achievemore than 20 cycles perminute. This corresponds in the case of a five-up die to amachine output ofmore than 100 packs perminute. For more information call 01793 425800, email
