tackles up-to-date relevant issues. It provides you with a better understanding of
events which are occurring all over the world.
What can I do after I’ve completed the course?
An A Level in Geography opens doors! You will find that studying geography is a brilliant step towards a wider range of HE courses and/or employment opportunities.
Further education
Geographers can go on to study higher level courses, including Foundation degrees, undergraduate degrees and/or BTEC Higher Nationals.

Subject at AS
At AS level (in Year 12) you will study global themes and you will discover how your own actions can relate to the wider world, be it your local area or a country far away. You will study two units, Unit 1 and Unit 2:
Unit 1 - Global Challenges
In this unit you will study a range of topics such as Natural Hazards, Climate Change, Globalisation and Migration.
Assessment: 1 ½ hour written exam. 60% of AS level Unit 2 - Geographical Investigations
This gives you an opportunity to undertake geographical research, including fieldwork. You will investigate two topics in depth – Crowded Coasts (physical geography) and Rebranding Places (human geography). As part of the study for this unit, you will be invited to attend a week-long residential fieldtrip in North Yorkshire, for which there is a compulsory cost of at least £300. More details relating to this fieldtrip are available from your Geography teacher.
Assessment: 1 1/4 hour written exam. (including assessment of fieldwork skills). 40% of AS level
Subject at A2
At A2 level (in Year 13) you will learn how the world is contested and develop practical research skills in your chosen area. You will study two units, Unit 3 and Unit 4:
Unit 3 - Contested Planet
Iin this unit you will consider five key world issues and in the sixth topic discuss possible technological solutions to the problems:
Energy Security Water Conflicts Biodiversity under Threat Superpower Geographies Bridging the Development Gap The Technological Fix?
Assessment: 2 ½ hour written exam (with pre-released material). 60% of A2 level
Unit 4 - Geographical Research
This will allow you to develop further the investigative skills gained at AS level and prepare you for the demands of higher education or employment. You will choose one topic from the following two options:

Assessment: 1 ½ hour written exam. 40% of A2 level 27
