AS/A2 IN STATISTICS One Year AS-Level Course or Full Two Year A-Level Course

Why study Statistics?

This course is designed for those who need more statistics than that contained in GCSE Mathematics, but do not want to take AS GCE or Advanced GCE Mathematics. It is particularly useful for those taking other GCE subjects that involve some statistics: Geography, Biology, Business Studies, Psychology, Economics etc. The mathematical demands of this AS Statistics specification have been kept to the minimum consistent with the subject. In particular, no knowledge of calculus is required.

Therefore, GCE Statistics provides a mathematically based qualification, without the more abstract, pure mathematics. The qualification also complements many of the students’ other subjects.

Few students realise the extent of the statistics component of any Bachelor of Science degree. The same is true of many Bachelor of Art degrees too. Many undergraduates are not prepared well enough with GCSE mathematics alone and struggle to pass undergraduate statistic modules. Studying statistics at GCE level will help.

Also, in the world of commerce and industry, statistics plays an increasing role as the business environment becomes increasingly more competitive. A sound knowledge of statistics will increase the students’ employability.

How are the lessons taught?

There will be eight hours of lessons every fortnight. Students will be expected to do at least a further 6 hours of private study every fortnight.
