AS/A2 LEVELS

Many European students take a broader study package and have a more demanding study schedule – typically 30 hours of teaching a week, compared to 16 hours in the UK. These are the students with whom our young people must compete for jobs and university places in a global marketplace.

The present curriculum

encourages A Level students to study a wider range of subjects at AS Level. Rather than study three straight A Levels for 2 years, a student might in the first year study four subjects to AS Level. They would then study two or three of those subjects for a full A level possibly picking up a further AS Level if they wished.

The AS qualification represents the first half of the full A Level (50% of the marks) and will:

encourage take-up of more subjects

ease progression from GCSE to advanced level study

count as a qualification itself and earn UCAS points

ONE YEAR COURSES

In recognition of the fact that students progress at different rates, and that a curriculum that meets the needs of one student may not meet the needs of another, a range of one year (Level 2) options will be offered on site in September 2012. At present, BTEC Diploma in Business, Extended Certificate in IT and a Diploma in Childcare and Education (Level 2) are offered. These options will enable successful students to achieve A Level qualifications at the end of 3 years’ of study.

ENRICHMENT CURRICULUM

The Sixth Form at Great Marlow School has a diverse and inclusive range of enrichment activities which demonstrate the importance to the school of imbuing the students with non-academic skills and fostering capable, caring individuals who are aware of their strengths and how to contribute to their community and wider society.

The opportunities for students offered by the enrichment programme are valued by universities and employers alike for the transferable skills which can be learnt and applied.

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) is a compulsory lesson in which students learn study skills, university and job application techniques, personal health and various modules which better their understanding of important issues in their society.

Our Senior Prefect Team is superb and are integral in helping to organise and run whole school events such as Children in Need, Red Nose Day, Sports Day and Open Evenings; many are involved in mentoring students in younger year groups and liaising with primary schools.

Our Senior Prefects are excellent role models and are led by the Head Boy and Head Girl who ensure that the student voice is heard and that student issue are represented. They ensure that there is excellent communication between staff and students and have a high profile within the school and the community.
