Shelter and Territory. Most populations require some form of shelter, which is provided by their habitats. Some of the reasons animals need shelter include to hide from predators; to sleep; to conceive, birth, and raise their young; to withstand weather that is less than ideal, such as storms. Most populations also need territory—enough space per animal or plant to obtain the food and water they need to survive.
