Migration paths are changing; sea ice is melting; weather patterns are shifting. The ultimate result is that traditional methods of survival are under severe threat.
While the situation for the people of Beringia is urgent, all of us face the same threats. Westerners may purchase food in a grocery store rather than hunt it on sea ice, but that only masks the fact that food must be grown under conditions that require a consistent and predictable climate. Droughts, killing frosts, hurricanes, and other unpredictable events wreak havoc on global food security.
Given the gravity of the threat, our efforts to reverse climate change must be paired with adaptive strategies to increase our food security.
