Figure 1. Natural Warming vs. Amplified Warming The figure below illustrates the impact of increased greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere.
The left side shows the balanced state of natural warming, in which sunlight warms the earth, which radiates heat into the atmosphere. Some of that reflected heat is trapped, the rest released to space.
The right side shows amplified warming. In this case, greenhouse gases allow less heat to escape the atmosphere into space. The additional trapped heat energy results in a warming planet.
