Module 4 • Ecology: Ocean in Motion Pass the Salt!
The ocean is salty. Freshwater is not. What does that mean? Well, for one thing, you can’t drink salt water. But you can float on both! Here’s a simple experiment to learn more about salt water. Materials:
a glass or jar to hold about 2 cups of water warm tap water salt
an egg
a tablespoon Procedure:
1. Fill the glass or jar two-thirds full of water. 2. Carefully lower the egg into the water with the spoon so you do not break it. Does it float?
3. Remove the egg and add about a tablespoon of salt to the water. Mix it well. Now lower the egg into the water again. Does it float now?
4. Remove the egg and add a second tablespoon of salt to the water. Again, mix it well and lower the egg into the water. Has anything changed?
