Teacher Notes 1-4a
Team: Dogs in the middle of the team are steady pullers that just truck ahead to get the job done; this is the place where youngsters go to be trained by the seasoned veterans, or lead and point dogs get a break from leading out.
Wheel and second-to-wheel: Positioned directly in front of the sled, and in the second section of dogs in front of the sled, these are usually the dogs with hard-core pulling technique as it is their tug that starts the sled—or youngsters learning the ropes of being great at “digging in.”
Team GoNorth! travels at a Polar Husky pace. The dogs run at an average of three to four miles per hour. The dogs can travel much faster when pulling an empty sled, but since the team is often traveling in remote areas with no trail and few resupply points, the dogs must deal with very heavy loads. Consequently, Team GoNorth! needs dog teams that balance speed with strength.
