1. Press an ice cube onto a piece of clay, and move it back and forth over the clay several times. 2. Observe what happened to the clay in step 1. 3. Place a small layer of sand on the clay. Put the ice cube on the sand for one minute. 4. Observe the side of the ice cube that was on the sand.
5. Place the ice cube back on the sand, and rub it back and forth several times over the clay. 6. Remove the ice cube and gently wipe the sand from the clay. 7. Observe the clay that was under the sand. 8. Clean up the learning center for the next group.
Discussion questions:
How is the glacier the same as and different from the other types of erosion you observed? Does it matter how thick/heavy the ice is (i.e., how hard you press)?
