Teacher Notes 1-4c
The framework of arches is called qaluugvik. Each pole has its own name with an assigned position and order in which it is added to the frame.
Before constructing the qaluugvik, poles must be carefully selected: tall, straight willow cut to the proper length and stripped of its branches and bark while still green.
The poles must be bent to their intended shape while still wet and pliable and then allowed to dry for several days.
To erect the framework, the poles are lashed together where they overlap; this forms the basic dome shape with an oval or round ground plan.
The overlapping poles allow the frame to be made larger or smaller depending on need.
