Regroup and recap their research. How does phytoplankton make its food? What eats phytoplankton? How does it sequester carbon dioxide? What other beneficial properties arise from its life?


Like plants on land, phytoplankton contain chlorophyll (the substance that makes plants green). This helps them to use energy from the sunlight to fuse water and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates, which is what plants use to grow (and what the rest of us eat when we eat plants). As a by-product of this process, oxygen is created. Phytoplankton account for fully 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe on earth!


5. Project the image of the carbon cycle in Teacher Notes 4-7b “Carbon Cycle.” This graphic shows how carbon is cycled through the atmosphere and water.


Focus on the far left of the illustration. Where do phytoplankton fit into the illustration? Before the dawn of the Industrial Age, the carbon cycle was finely balanced. Animals and decaying matter gave


off CO2, and phytoplankton and other plants absorbed it, while giving off oxygen.


Many forms of phytoplankton use their carbohydrates to build tiny shells, or plates, just like larger shellfish (shrimp, mussels, etc.). In a naturally balanced system, these plates permanently sequester CO2—when the phytoplankton die, they drop to the bottom of the

concentrations of atmospheric CO2 over time. Today, CO2 levels are higher than they have been in 400,000 years as a result of human uses of fossil fuels—another carbon sink—which release CO2 in combustion.


6. Point out the pH levels at the ocean’s surface. What is pH?


pH measures how acidic a liquid is (lower numbers mean higher acidity). Acidity is a property that emerges when chemicals affect the behavior of hydrogen ions in water. A substance can either be an acid, a base, or a neutral. Pure water is neutral; seawater is normally slightly base. Vinegar, lemon juice, and battery acid are all acids. pH is an expression of the concentration of free hydrogen ions in the water. Liquids with low pH are acidic; high are base.

So the graphic shows that the ocean is becoming more acidic. Why might this be?


The rate of increase in CO2 emissions is greater than the rate at which phytoplankton can convert it to carbohydrates. The excess reacts with water to make it more acidic. 7. What impact does this increased acidity have on ocean life-forms? On phytoplankton? The demonstration described in Teacher Notes 4-7.3b “Shells in Acid” provides an answer.
