The first section shows 9+ coverage. How many tenths does this tell you are covered by ice?
1. Reading down the left-hand column, we see that 4/10 of the ice cover consists of what stage of ice?
The middle column indicates that 3/10 of the ice cover is made up of grey-white ice (5).
2. The third column shows that 3/10 of the ice cover is what kind of ice?
All ice types are in the form of small ice floes, as indicated by the three 3s in section four.
There is a trace of medium first-year ice represented by the “1.” to the left, outside the Egg Code.
Case Study G:
This is young ice, 10–15 cm thick, which is less elastic than nilas and breaks on swell. It usually rafts under pressure.
3. What kind of ice is it, according to the egg code?

Case Study H:
The 9+ in the first section of the Egg Code shows that the area is almost completely covered in ice.
Reading down the left-hand column we see this coverage is composed of 5/10 thin first- year ice (7) in big floes (5).
A look at the middle column expands our knowledge by filling in another part of the coverage picture: 3/10 grey-white ice (5) in medium floes (4).
In the right-hand column we see there is also 2/10 coverage in new ice (1). What does the “X” indicate?
