Reading down the left-hand column we see the thickest ice would consist of 1/10 multi- year ice (9). Looking to the bottom section, what is the form of the ice?
In the middle column, we see 9/10 of ice cover is medium first-year ice (1.) The bottom section gives a further refinement, telling us that this ice is fast ice (8). (Fast ice is ice that is fast to the shore—i.e., it is fixed and doesn’t move with currents or drift until it melts in the spring.)
